Summary of NHL games, Tuesday, February 27, 2024

The Red Wings savored victory in a sixth straight game while the Capitals returned home with their heads down for a second consecutive game. This is the first time since November 15, 2017 that Detroit has scored so many goals in a game.

Quebec Capitals Hendrix Lapierre continued his momentum with a third goal in his last two games. This time, he was the author of his fifth of the season on passes from Alex Ovechkin and Anthony Mantha. Lapierre had his first career double in his last match against Ottawa.

JT Compher, with his second of the season coming a man short, and Joe Veleno had a goal and an assist each for the Wings.

Quebecer David Perron and Patrick Kane each collected two assists. Kane has a point in each of his last nine games. The longest such streak for the Wings in the last 25 years is nine and belongs since the 2008-09 season to Marian Hossa.

Ovechkin finished the game with two assists. During a power play, he was an accomplice on former Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty’s third goal of the season.

Goalie Alex Lyon signed the victory with 17 saves while Charlie Lindgren had a difficult evening as he was beaten eight times on 31 shots.

Sean Monahan is happy in front of his Winnipeg fans.

The forward scored his sixth goal in a Jets uniform during a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

The former Montreal Canadiens has hit the target six times in his last five outings, including the hat trick against the Calgary Flames on February 19. Against the Blues, Monahan stood out at the top of the slot and he took a one-timer after a pass from Nikolaj Ehlers to open the scoring. Monahan, who also had an assist, missed the Jets’ last game because he was ill.

Brenden Dillon and Kyle Connor also scored during the first 20 minutes of play for Winnipeg, which returned to the locker room with a 3-1 lead due to Pavel Buchnevich’s goal.

Brandon Saad brought the Blues within a single goal in the middle period, but Alex Iafallo dealt a big blow to their hopes in the third period.

Laurent Brossoit excelled in goal for the Manitoba team with 36 saves in front of 13,139 fans at the Canada Life Centre, to allow the Jets to join the Dallas Stars at the top of the Central division with 79 points.

Joel Hofer started his first game in his hometown. He blocked 28 shots.

Matthew Tkachuk scored a goal and collected an assist in his return to the game and the Florida Panthers defeated the Buffalo Sabers 3-2.

Tkachuk made it 2-1 for the Panthers on a power play with 4:24 left in the first period. The home favorites never lost the lead to win an eighth game in their last nine and join the Boston Bruins atop the Eastern Conference standings.

Tkachuk missed his team’s last game due to an upper-body injury suffered Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sam Bennett and Brandon Montour also lit the red light for the Panthers. Montour added two assists, having amassed 10 points in his last five games. Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves.

Dylan Cozens and Tage Thompson responded for the Sabres, who had won their last three meetings. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 35 shots.

Kucherov adds to his tally in defeat

Tyson Foerster scored the first of three Flyers goals in 6:01 of the final period as Philadelphia posted a 6-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Foerster, Travis Sanheim and Sean Walker brought the Flyers cushion to 4-1.

Bobby Brink, Noah Cates and Cam York were the other scorers for the Flyers, who had lost their last two games.

Samuel Ersson made 21 saves, being thwarted by Nicholas Paul and Steven Stamkos.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 23 shots for the Lightning, who had won four straight road games.

NHL scoring leader Nikita Kucherov increased his total to 103 points with an assist on Stamkos’ goal.

In the first period, the match was interrupted for nine minutes by a partial power outage at the Wells Fargo Center.

Noesen breaks the tie with his visor

Stefan Noesen broke the tie with his visor in the third period, guiding the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild.

Jordan Staal and Andrei Svechnikov scored the other goals for the Hurricanes, who are 10-1-2 in their last 13 road games.

Teuvo Teravainen gave it to Jack Drury whose pass deflected against the visor of Noesen, who was battling with Dakota Mermis to be in good position, near the net. Noesen scored his 13th goal this season, at 11:00.

Pyotr Kochetkov made 28 saves in a winning cause.

Connor Dewar and Jonas Brodin fought back for the Wild, who had won their last two games.

Ryan Hartman assisted on both goals, while Filip Gustavsson blocked 25 shots.

A 98th point for MacKinnon, Makar at the top among defensemen

Nathan MacKinnon moved a little closer to the 100-point plateau thanks to a performance of a goal and an assist in a 5-1 victory for the Colorado Avalanche against the Dallas Stars.

With 98 points in 60 games, he almost equaled Peter Stastny, who amassed 100 points in the same period of time with the Nordiques during the 1981-1982 season, en route to the best individual season in the history of the organization, or 139 points.

MacKinnon has a point in 29 games played at home this season, the sixth longest streak in NHL history behind Wayne Gretzky (40) in 1988-89.

Author of a 49th assist this season, on MacKinnon’s goal, Cale Makar has overtaken Tyson Barrie for the greatest number of points from a defender in franchise history with a total of 308 Makar accomplished this feat in 293 games, compared to 484 games for Barrie.

Logan Stankoven opened the scoring after just 1 minute of action, but the Avalanche scored five unanswered goals, including three in the second period, during a surge started by Joel Kiviranta.

Mikko Rantanen collected his 31st goal of the season, while the others were scored by Andrew Cogliano and Artturi Lehkonen.

Alexandar Georgiev made 33 saves for the Avs at their home fortress, where they have lost just six games this season. They have at the same time closed the gap with the Stars, who are only two points ahead of them in second place in the Central division.

Despite Valeri Nichushkin being cleared to return to practice by the NHL Player Assistance Program, the forward was not in uniform tonight. Nichushkin signed up for the program on January 15, but a date has not been set for his return to play.

Sharangovich preserves Flames streak

Yegor Sharangovich broke a tie in the third period and the Calgary Flames won their fourth straight game by defeating the Los Angeles Kings 4-2.

Andrew Mangiapane and Blake Coleman had previously scored for the Flames and Mikael Backlund sealed the outcome of the game in an empty net. Chris Tanev was complicit in two goals.

The Flames remain five points behind the Nashville Predators and the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Quebecer Jonathan Huberdeau collected an assist. After a complicated start to the season, he amassed 11 points in his last 10 games.

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 20 saves and recorded his fifth assist of the season in the victory, more than any other goaltender in the National Hockey League.

Phillip Danault and Kevin Fiala scored in the second period for the Kings, who have lost three of their last four games. Cam Talbot stopped 33 pucks.

The Kings were without Adrian Kempe, who was injured Monday against the Edmonton Oilers.

Important brands for Crosby and Karlsson

Erik Karlsson broke the deadlock in overtime to help the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Vancouver Canucks 4-3.

Karlsson became the fifth defenseman all time to score 10 game-winning goals in overtime, joining Brent Burns (16), Scott Niedermayer (13), Seth Jones (11) and Kristopher Letang (11).

Sidney Crosby, for his part, became the ninth player in NHL history to collect 1,000 points at even strength. He is the fourth fastest to achieve the feat, in his 1246 career match, after Wayne Gretzky (608), Marcel Dionne (1143) and Jaromir Jagr (1165).

Rickard Rakell scored twice and Tristan Jarry made 32 saves to help their team pick up a point in four straight games (3-0-1). Lars Eller was the other scorer.

In the other clan, JT Miller had a goal and an assist, while Thatcher Demko made 35 saves for the Canucks, who are 1-4-1 in their last six outings.

With two points in the loss, Miller became the third Canucks player to have three consecutive seasons of at least 80 points, after Henrik Sedin and Markus Naslund.
