Summary of NHL games, Saturday, January 13, 2024

TJ Oshie broke the deadlock at 8:29 in the third period on Saturday, guiding the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

Oshie redirected a Dylan Strome pass for his third goal of the season. His 183rd career goal allowed him to move up to tenth place among scorers in Capitals history.

He scored 1:53 after teammate Nic Dowd’s tying goal, after a superb move by Evgeny Kuznetsov.

The Russian went around the net at high speed then, with his backhand, he sent the puck towards the top of the net. Dowd put his stick in the right place, scoring his third goal in four games.

Anthony Mantha scored the Capitals’ other goal late in the first period. Mantha surpassed his total of eleven goals he scored last year in 67 games in Detroit last year. His career high is 25.

Charlie Lindgren of the Capitals made 25 saves, seven more than Jonathan Quick.

Adam Fox scored twice for Rangers, who have lost their last four games.

Fox completed a double at 5:15 in the middle period, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead.

He has scored four goals in his last four games.

Fox gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 13:23 in the first period from a tight angle.

Mantha created the deadlock at 17:50 of the backhand, during a breakaway.

Connor McMichael passed the puck forward after a shot from K’Andre Miller was blocked by the Capitals.

The Capitals were finishing a five-game homestand.

The Capitals were without the services of their captain Alex Ovechkin who is injured in his lower body.

The minimum is enough for the Canucks

Thatcher Demko made 26 saves to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 1-0 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

Demko now has four shutouts this season and seven in his career. The Canucks have won their last five games, all played on the road.

Sam Lafferty scored the only goal of the match. He hit the target at 2:05 of the second period, recovering a rebound in the slot to score his 10th goal of the campaign.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen blocked 22 pucks in front of the Sabres, who had not been shut out since December 16.

Two plays were the subject of lengthy video reviews in the second half. The first came early in the period, when Brock Boeser hit the target with a wrist shot. The decision rendered on the ice, however, was overturned due to offside.

A few minutes later, the referees wanted to review a JT Miller elbow to the head of defender Rasmus Dahlin to determine if a major penalty was necessary, but ultimately opted for a minor penalty.

Sabers defenseman Mattias Samuelsson left the game with an upper-body injury in the second period and did not return afterward. He appeared to be hit in the head by Filip Hronek.

Devils end Panthers’ winning streak

Nico Daws made 36 saves and the New Jersey Devils ended the Florida Panthers’ nine-game winning streak with a 4-1 win.

Daws improved to 3-0-0 on the road this season, having played only his fourth game since the start of the campaign.

The Devils scored the first three goals of the game.

Jesper Bratt scored in a second straight game. He joined Tyler Toffoli as the Devils’ top scorer with 16 goals.

Alexander Holtz, Erik Haula and John Marino – the latter in an empty net – also scored for the Devils, who have obtained at least one point in seven of their last nine games (6-2-1).

Sam Reinhart scored his 31st goal of the season for the Panthers and Sergei Bobrovsky – who was chosen by fans to play in the National Hockey League All-Star Game – stopped 18 pucks.

Reinhart has flashed the red light 13 times in his last 10 games, including at least once in his last six.

Matthew Tkachuk and Brandon Montour had assists on Reinhart’s goal. For Tkachuk, it was an eighth straight game with at least one point. He totaled seven goals and 17 points during this sequence.

The Panthers’ nine-game winning streak was the third longest in Panthers history.
