NEW YORK — Teuvo Teravainen deftly redirected the puck past Igor Shesterkin with 2:33 left in the game as the Carolina Hurricanes upset the New York Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday.
Brent Burns sent a cross pass in the direction of Teraivanen, and the Finn redirected it in the upper part, knocking out the fans packed in Madison Square Garden;
The New Yorkers looked set to win as they took the lead for the second time of the night, just past the halfway mark in the third period.
13e Kappo Kaako’s campaign goal was however quickly followed by a retort from Stefan Noesen, fueled by line-mates Jordan Staal and Jesper Fast.
Jalen Chatfield also hit the target in the final period for Carolina (46-15-8), which thus reached the 100-point plateau for the second straight season, and third in their history.
It was also the fewest meetings Rod Brind’Amour’s men needed to get there, 69.
The Canes have won three of their last four games to maintain their grip on first place in the Metropolitan Division standings.
Despite allowing three goals in the final 20 minutes, Shesterkin had 37 saves for Rangers (41-20-10), who saw their seven-game regulation unbeaten streak (6- 0-1).
Besides Kakko, Tyler Motte was the other scorer for Gerard Gallant’s squad.
The Blueshirts are third in the Metropolitan, eight points behind the Canes.
New York directed 31 shots on Frederik Andersen’s goal.
Another avalanche of goals in Buffalo
Luke Evangelista had a second game of two goals in the NHL, Matt Duchene also scored twice and the Nashville Predators defeated the Buffalo Sabers 7-3. Evangelista was also instrumental in two Preds goals to increase his total points to four, a high for him in the NHL.
The Sabers’ woes at home continue; the team has allowed 26 goals in its last four games in front of its fans, a sad team record in a streak of four consecutive games.
Buffalo is, however, struggling in all arenas on the Bettman circuit these days, as evidenced by their 10 losses in their last 12 games.
Philip Tomasino, Tommy Novak and Ryan McDonagh scored the other goals for the Preds, who rebounded from a 7-0 beating on Sunday against the New York Rangers. Tomasino also added an assist. The team’s first pick of 2019 has six points in his last six games.
Dylan Cozens, Tage Thompson and Jeff Skinner were the scorers in the Sabers camp. Skinner hit the 30-goal mark for the sixth time in his career.
Craig Anderson was kicked out of the game after allowing six goals on just 20 shots. Juuse Saros was solid in front of the net for the Preds with a 28-save performance.
Clutterbuck takes care of the Leafs
Cal Clutterbuck scored twice and added an assist as the New York Islanders easily edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-2.
The Islanders support staff had a lot of fun against the Leafs. In addition to Clutterbuck’s two goals, Zach Parise, Simon Holmstrom and Hudson Fasching all flashed the red light.
Noah Dobson and Anders Lee scored the other two goals for the Islanders, who posted their third straight win and sixth in eight games.
Besides Dobson’s goal, scored in an empty net, Ilya Samsonov did not have a great game in front of the Leafs cage. The Russian goalkeeper yielded six times in front of 28 shots.
His compatriot Ilya Sorokin was effective on the other side of the ice with 25 saves. Mitch Marner and Sam Lafferty, with his first with the Leafs, outsmarted Sorokin. Marner’s goal was his 27th of the season.
Veteran Maple Leafs defenseman TJ Brodie was not in uniform in the Toronto camp. Brodie was injured after blocking a shot in Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Senators.
Boldy thanks his keeper at the last moment
Matt Boldy scored at the very last moment in overtime to thank his goaltender and give the Minnesota Wild a 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
Boldy appeared alone in front of Vitek Vanecek as the last seconds on the clock ticked away. Boldy barely had time to complete his fake to outsmart Vanecek as the siren sounded for the end of the period.
This goal rewarded Filip Gustavsson who was impressive in front of the cage for the Wild. The goaltender saved 47 pucks. He only gave in to Mason Shaw.
Timo Meier provided the line midway through the third period when he completed the turnstile to surprise Vanecek. The Devils goaltender finished the game with 27 saves.
