The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a slump and looked good on Wednesday, but they blew a four-goal lead before losing 5-4 in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings.
Jake Walman scored the game-winning goal 2:13 into overtime to complete the Wings’ comeback by outnumbering himself in the opposing territory and deflecting a return past goaltender Casey DeSmith for his second goal of the season.
It’s only a second victory in their last eight games for Derek Lalonde’s men.
The Penguins have now lost four of their last five games.
Drew O’Connor opened the scoring for the Penguins with his first goal of the season on a wrist shot.
Jeff Carter then took advantage of a numerical advantage to vibrate the ropes and double the lead of his team.
Jason Zucker made it 3-0, then came back with 33 seconds left in the opening period, giving the Penguins a fourth goal on 12 shots.
The Red Wings finally got a boost in the second period and cut the deficit to 4-2 on goals from Dylan Larkin and Joe Veleno. The latter obtained his fifth goal of the year, and his first only in 16 outings.
The visitors did not let go, Jonatan Berggren recovering to 4-3, then David Perron forced extra time with his third goal in as many games.
Magnus Hellberg took over for Ville Husso in the second period and made 19 saves in the victory. Husso stopped eight shots in the first period.
In the other clan, DeSmith made 41 saves.
