Jakub Vrana will use the NHL’s aid program

DETROIT — Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana will be sidelined indefinitely as he joins the NHL’s Player Assistance Program on Wednesday.

Under the terms of the joint program with the Players Association, Vrana will continue to be paid while he receives treatment.

He will return to the club when the program administrators allow him to return to the ice.

Nearly an hour after the NHL’s announcement, the Red Wings have simply said they are aware of the news and will not comment on the situation.

The 26-year-old Czech winger appeared in the Red Wings’ first two games of the season, but then missed Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings due to personal reasons.

Vrana has 98 goals and 91 assists in 323 career games. He was selected by the Washington Capitals with the 13th overall pick in the 2014 draft.

The Red Wings acquired Vrana in a trade with the Capitals in April 2021. In addition to Vrana, the Red Wings acquired Richard Panik, a first- and second-round pick in exchange for Anthony Mantha. Just over a year ago, the Red Wings signed him to a three-year contract worth $5.25 million per season.

The Player Assistance Program was established by the NHL and the Players Association in 1996, and a confidential player assistance line is available.

This program helps players and their loved ones who are struggling with mental health, addictions and other issues. An advisor is available in each of the cities of the league.
