The day after his Instagram post in which he explained that he needed to take a break from hockey, Jonathan Toews spoke to the media to offer a few more details.
The forward, who has worn the colors of the Chicago Blackhawks since the start of his career in 2007, recalled that he had experienced major health problems in recent years and he needed to recover.
“It had gotten to the point where the last two seasons, it was really difficult,” he said. Not only to play, but to recover every day. This was where my immune system was under a lot of stress. I’ve gotten to the point where mentally it wasn’t worth it and I really want to get back in good shape and healthy. That’s my first goal now. “
Last season, the 35-year-old played 53 games, scoring 31 points. Throughout his career, Toews has appeared in 1,067 games, scored 372 goals and recorded 883 points.
The Franco-Manitoban was selected by the Hawks third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. They made him their captain when Toews was only 20 years old.
