In transfer rumors for several days, it is with the Bears that Montez Sweat will write his future, at least until the end of the season. Chicago and Washington have agreed on a transfer of the 27-year-old defensive end, who therefore joins Illinois for a 2nd round of the 2024 draft, as ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced.
The names of Montez Sweat and Chase Young were the most mentioned among those who could leave the Commanders. It is the less fragile of the two who will be the first to pack his bags and leave the capital. Drafted in the 1st round in 2019, Sweat spent four and a half seasons in Washington, and leaves with 34.5 sacks in 66 games.
He arrives in a Chicago team that is rebuilding, and which really needs his contribution in the pass rush. Author of 6.5 sacks since the start of the season, Montez Sweat joins a squad that has only tackled the opposing quarterback 10 times. His talent opposite Yannick Ngakoue will therefore greatly improve the Bears’ defensive line.
The Commanders are parting ways with a high-quality player, but at the end of his contract after this season. Following the re-signing of Daron Payne last offseason, and with Jonathan Allen’s big contract, Washington no longer has much money to devote to its defensive line. It seems that the leaders have chosen to keep Chase Young rather than Montez Sweat. But the transfer period is not over yet.
