Vikings: Kevin O'Connell extends!

When you've found the rare gem, it's better to keep it for yourself. That's what the Vikings did. The Minnesota franchise announced on its social networks that an agreement has been reached with head coach Kevin O'Connell for a contract extension of “multiple seasons”. A win-win agreement if we are to believe the main stakeholders.

“Kevin is exactly who we thought he would be when we named him head coach: an innovative strategist, an excellent communicator and a strong leader who motivates and connects with his players,” says owner and president Mark Wilf.

“I am honored to continue to lead the Vikings,” O’Connell said.

Kevin O'Connell, a new lease of life in Minneapolis

Arriving just two years ago, O'Connell has breathed new life into Minnesota. From his first season at the head of the team in 2022, the disciple of Sean McVay leads the Vikings to their first division title since 2017 with a record of thirteen victories for four defeats. The 2023 season was much more complicated since the Vikings only won seven games. At the end of the season, quarterback Kirk Cousins left the Vikings to join the Falcons. Observers then expect the 2024 season to be even more complicated. However, against all odds, the Vikings had a great season, winning fourteen regular season matches, all led by a transformed Sam Darnold. Despite everything, there remains a dark side to the picture. During its two playoff campaigns in 2022 and 2024, the Vikings lost in their first game even though they were favorites (against the Giants in 2022 and against the Rams in 2024).

Kevin O'Connell, a pedigree that arouses desire

Building on his success in Minnesota, Kevin O'Connell was highly coveted. The coach would enter the last year of his contract in 2025. His contractual status had been the source of rumors in recent weeks. Jay Glazer of NFL on Fox had reported that several franchises wanted to sign O'Connell via trade. However, the Vikings were strongly opposed to this. Asked about his contractual situation during his end-of-season press conference, the main person concerned explicitly proclaimed his desire to extend with the Vikings, emphasizing his very good relations with the owner of the franchise. Five days later, O'Connell was officially extended.
