The Cleveland Browns' lease on their downtown stadium ends in 2028. Where will they go next?
Since Wednesday, we know what they want: to head to the Brook Park neighborhood to play in a brand new $2.4 billion stadium.
An indoor stadium, which would allow Cleveland to claim to host major events, such as the Super Bowl, throughout the year.
Browns Want New Stadium, But Politely
In a lengthy letter to franchise fans, executive team member Dave Jenkins unveils the project. The letter is a balancing act.
Jenkins explains that the city of Cleveland presented a renovation project for the current stadium in the city center a few days ago. And he promises that the Browns are studying the project. But still, it is impossible to cover this current stadium, and the work would be massive to bring it up to par with the ultra-modern enclosures built in recent years.
After listing the problems with the renovation, Jenkins launches into a much longer list of the benefits of building a new stadium: revitalizing the Brook Park neighborhood, being able to host events year-round… And it would even allow the city to revitalize the downtown and lakefront by razing the current stadium and putting something else in it.
All this for just $1.2 billion of public money.
