Heralded as a generational prodigy upon his arrival in the NFL, Trevor Lawrence has not yet quite lived up to expectations on the field.
But retaining a good quarterback is expensive. And the Jaguars therefore decided to sign a big check to their pitcher. ESPN reports that the Jacksonville franchise and Lawrence have agreed to a 5-year contract extension for $275 million.
Of this total, 200 million would be guaranteed, including 142 million whatever happens upon signing. Trevor Lawrence has already received a signing bonus of $37.5 million. A rather profitable spring.
Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow at the top of the pyramid
With an average of $55 million per season, this new contract makes Trevor Lawrence the highest paid player in the NFL, tied with Joe Burrow, who signed his extension in September 2023.
The two men are ahead of Jared Goff ($53M/season), Justin Herbert ($52.5M), Lamar Jackson ($52M) and Jalen Hurts ($51M). Patrick Mahomes is further behind at $46.3 million per year.
In terms of guarantees, Lawrence still remains the 230 million guaranteed to Deshaun Watson by the Browns.
A contract for potential
Unlike some of the names already mentioned, Lawrence has yet to appear in the Super Bowl or win an individual trophy. After a difficult rookie season under the orders of Urban Meyer (12 TDs, 17 int) he bounced back in 2022 with 25 touchdowns for 8 interceptions, and above all a title for his team in the AFC South and a victory in the playoffs after a big comeback against the Chargers.
But 2023 did not mark any progress. Jacksonville lost its title in a division where the franchise was the favorite, and Lawrence threw 21 touchdowns to 14 interceptions.
But the number 1 in the 2021 Draft is still only 24 years old. And the managers of the Jaguars are therefore betting on the potential.
