The Super Bowl and New Orleans is a story that lasts. Since 1970, Big Easy Hosted ten finals and is about to receive its eleventh. With at least one Big game By decade, the city will have been responsible and the honor of organizing almost 20% of super bowls. What is enough to immerse yourself in a retrospective of these NFL history pieces.
Throughout their common history, New Orleans and the Super Bowl have always produced more than successful events. Hanging matches, suspense, touchdowns, laughter, tears, surprises, big half-time shows (U2, Beyoncé, …), in short everything that makes a big super bowl.
Hoping that the Super Bowl Lix will be of the same caliber.
Super Bowl XXXVI: The start of the unexpected reign of Tom Brady and Patriots
New England Patriots-St. Louis Rams (20-17)- February 3, 2002 – Louisiana Superdome
Exceptional super bowl in many ways. Due to the attacks of September 11, 2001, the league reprogram a regular season week. The big match is thus shifted for a week, becoming the first to be played in February.
First victory for Tom Brady (QB, MVP of the match) and Bill Belichick, however far from being a favorite, which will be the beginning of a long love story between the Pats and the Super Bowl. On the other side, this is the last Super Bowl disputed by Saint Louis Rams, relocated to Los Angeles in 2016.
Super Bowl XLVII: the most electric … or not
Baltimore Ravens-San Francisco 49ers (34-31)- February 3, 2013-Mercedes-Benz Superdome
For the first time, two brothers coach each other in the final. John Harbaugh's Ravens break up from Jim's 49ers. This is the first Super Bowl played in New Orleans since 2005 and Hurricane Katrina. The Har-Bowl will also be the last match of the legends Ray Lewis (LB, Ravens) and Randy Moss (WR, 49ers) which hang up the crampons after well-filled careers.
But the match remains famous for an extra-sporting reason. At 13 minutes and 22 seconds from the end of the third quarter, the electricity broke down in a part of the stadium. The match is interrupted for 34 minutes! A surrealist scene for everyone: players on the field, public is half in the dark and viewers falling asleep in front of their television. This year's match will be the first since this cut.
Joe Flacco (QB) is elected MVP of the match. 7 yards from the in-goal area, led 34-29 less than two minutes from the end, San Francisco fails to convert into the fourth attempt. John takes the best of Jim, before revenge?

Led by Len Dawson (QB, MVP of the match, even smoking a cigarette at halftime!), The Chiefs won in front of an audience of more than 80,000 people. This match will be the last confrontation for the Inter-Ligues championship, between the AFL and the NFL, before the merger. In a wet atmosphere, the defense of Kansas City makes the Vikings thwart: 67 yards only on the ground, 3 interceptions and 2 losses of balls.
Super Bowl XXIV: the biggest box in the history of the Super Bowl
San Francisco 49ers-Denver Broncos (55-10)- January 28, 1990 – Louisiana Superdome
The 49ers carried out the double after having already won the Super Bowl in 1989 (also in 1982 and 1985). The little extra? They achieved the performance with two different coaches, George Seifert having taken the place of Bill Walsh after his retirement.
Joe Montana (QB, MVP of the match) and his 5 touchdowns left no hope to the broncos of John Elway (QB). The latter take the biggest defeat in the history of the Super Bowl in number of points, gap and touchdowns.
Super Bowl XXXI: The rebirth of packers
Green Bay Packers-New England Patriots (35-21)- January 26, 1997 – Louisiana Superdome
Packers end an almost 30 -year -old scarcity. Brett Favre (QB) wins its only Super Bowl but it is Desmond Howard (KR/PR) which is appointed MVP of the match with more than 240 combined yards and a commitment returned in touchdown of 99 yards.
Drew Bledsoe (QB) establishes a sad record, with four interceptions launched. He will be well champion with the patriots 5 years later as … replacing, having lost his place for the benefit of Tom Brady.
Super Bowl XX: a massacre for the only bears ring
Chicago Bears-New England Patriots (46-10)- January 26, 1986 – Louisiana Superdome
The Bears conclude their almost perfect 1985 season (15 victories – 1 defeat) with the way. Defense of Monsters of the Midway Leave Tony Eason (QB) and his attack on no chance.
Richard Dent (de) is also appointed MVP of the match with 1.5 sacks, 2 losses of forced bullets and a blocked pass. It will be the only championship won by Chicago during the Super Bowl era (to date). The patriots have caught up well since …
Super Bowl VI: The cold and the first cowboys
Dallas Cowboys-Miami Dolphins (24-3)- January 16, 1972 – Tulane Stadium
First title for cowboys and with the way. Only three points conceded, a real rout for Don Shula, the legendary coach of Miami. Roger Staubach (QB, MVP of the match) and Tom Landry (HC) have done everything to give no chance to the dolphins: 23 First Downs and 252 yards on the ground.
The coldest super bowl in history (4 ° C), the match was also an opportunity to pay tribute to the legend of Jazz Louis Armstrong, who died a few months earlier.
Super Bowl XV: John Madden triumph
Oakland Raiders-Philadelphia Eagles (27-10)- January 25, 1981 – Louisiana Superdome
Raiders become the first team Wild Card To win the Super Bowl. In a patriotic atmosphere, only five days after the hostage crisis in Iran, Jim Plunkett (QB, MVP of the match) and Rod Martin (LB, 3 interceptions) lead Oakland to his second coronation.
Eagles will have to wait 36 long years before finally winning the Grail.
Super Bowl XII: The first Super Bowl in a dome
Dallas Cowboys-Denver Broncos (27-10)- January 15, 1978 – Louisiana Superdome
First Super Bowl played in a dome, second victory for Tom Landry and Roger Staubach. This time, the quarterback is not elected man of the match.
Place in La Défense with Harvey Martin (de) and Randy White (DT) named CO-MVP. A beautiful tribute for the Doomsday Defense (Defense of the Last Judgment, just that), which forces eight losses of bullets and authorizes only eight passes for 61 yards.
Super Bowl IX: The last match of the Tulane Stadium
Pittsburgh Steelers-Minnesota Vikings (16-6)- January 12, 1975 – Tulane Stadium
For its last professional match, the Tulane Stadium has not seen the most exciting performance. With only 2 points scored at halftime, the match was mainly defensive.
The Steelers end up taking off in the second half, in the momentum of Franco Harris (FB, MVP of the match) and its 158 yards on the ground. New Orleans definitely does not succeed in Vikings who lose their second Super Bowl in Louisiana.
