NFL votes to activate third quarterback in case of emergency
The 49ers’ misadventure in the conference finals gave the league ideas. On Monday, NFL owners passed a rule allowing teams to have a third quarterback in uniform on game days, without that player counting as an active player on the game roster. It’s the return of the emergency quarterback.
This third pitcher will become active only if the first two quarterbacks are injured or ruled out. But be careful, if one of these two men can return, then the emergency quarterback will have to leave and will not have the right to play in another position.
Prohibition also for the third quarterback to return if the holder and his substitutes are sent to the bench because they play badly. It will have to be either an injury or an exclusion.
As a reminder, San Francisco saw Brock Purdy then Josh Johnson get injured in the conference final. Christian McCaffrey then found himself with the role of emergency quarterback. Purdy came back into play, but was unable to throw the ball, which inevitably jeopardized his team’s chances.
Thursday night games become “flexible”
At the end of the season, the NFL reserves the right to modify the programming of matches to offer the most glamorous posters in prime time. An option that she has just offered herself for the Thursday meetings. On Monday, the owners voted in favor of a measure that allows the programming of Thursdays to be modified at the end of the season. 24 owners voted in favour, which was exactly the minimum number of votes required.
Between Weeks 13 and 17 of the regular season, the league may spend a Sunday game on the Thursday box. The meeting originally scheduled for Thursday will therefore move to Sunday. The NFL must give notice of this change at least 28 days in advance.
A team can only be rescheduled once during the year. And the number of Thursday games remains limited to two per franchise throughout the season.

In short
– Jim Irsay (owner, Colts) is the first league executive to reveal part of the negotiations for the takeover of the Commanders. According to NFL Network, he confirmed the league’s willingness to sell the franchise to the group led by Josh Harris, with the hope that the transaction will be completed before the start of the regular season. However, according to Irsay, “there remains a lot of work to be done” before the agreement takes shape.
– Green Bay’s offensive system will not be fixed until the end of the summer. After the departure of Aaron Rodgers in New York, the Packers will test Jordan Love (QB) during the pre-season before defining what their offense will be for 2023. Adam Stenavich (OC) thus confirmed to the Wisconsin State Journal that the club is waiting to see the chemistry and leadership of its new quarterback with its receivers and tight ends during Organized Team Activities and gala games before making strategic choices.
– If the D-Roraft will settle in Detroit in 2024 and Green Bay in 2025, Charlotte would like to host the big college draft for 2026. WSOC-TV reveals that a group of NFL officials made the trip to Carolina at the beginning of the month to assess a possible application.
– Despite “productive talks” with Arizona, Budda Baker (S) is not present for spring training. Jonathan Gannon (HC) told PHNX Sports that his defender “is hard at work on his preparation”, and that he “will come when he wants to come”.
– On the Baltimore side, Lamar Jackson (QB) is missing. According to ProFootballTalk.com, the quarterback didn’t participate in the Ravens’ first 10 Organized Team Activities, but is expected to return this week to acclimate to new offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s system.

Already a 10/10 for Bryce Young
Everything is wonderful in the offseason. New example: Bryce Young (QB, Panthers) is apparently already perfect. Asked about the performance of his new pitcher, Frank Reich did not skimp.
“In total control. You could see that he saw things, that he read the game correctly, the precision in his throwing, the placement of the ball… Everything was very good, ”assured the coach to the press.
Young took the majority of snaps with the starters in the first spring training.
Commanders not worried by Colts for Andrew Luck
Washington did not contact Andrew Luck or his entourage directly. The franchise has therefore not violated NFL rules which prohibit contacting a player under contract with another team. This is reported by ESPN, stating that the Colts are satisfied with the investigation.
As a reminder, ESPN reported a few weeks ago that the Commanders considered Andrew Luck in the spring of 2022 when looking for a quarterback solution. With Luck still having three years left on his contract with the Colts when he retired, contacting him is illegal. Apparently Washington didn’t go that far.
DeAndre Hopkins aims for “stable management, a quarterback who likes the game and a good defense”
According to the Cardinals’ official website, DeAndre Hopkins (WR) is not present for the start of spring training. The club still hopes to set up a trade for the All-Pro receiver, but so far nothing has happened in this direction and Hopkins prefers to work on his conditioning on his side.
“I am looking for stable management. I think I haven’t had that the last few years with Houston and Arizona. I’ve seen three or four GMs during my career, so I want stable management. I also want a quarterback who loves the game, someone who takes others with him, and who pushes others as much as himself… And a great defense. Big defenses win championships,” Hopkins said during the I Am Athlete podcast.
Matt Corral: ‘I don’t want to be traded’
With the arrival of Andy Dalton and the selection of Bryce Young, Matt Corral (QB) finds himself relegated to the bottom of the Carolina roster. And if the sophomore had seemed to express spite on social networks at the time of the first general choice of the draft by his club, he assures today that this is not the case. He understands that in his position it is best to play the long term, and he says he does not want to be traded.
“I want to play for the coach [Frank] Reich,” Corral told the team site.
