Sam Darnold joins the 49ers

The 49ers are farsighted. Faced with uncertainty about the state of health of their two quarterbacks, the Californians opted for an insurance policy. According to ESPN, Sam Darnold has signed up for one season with San Francisco.

Trey Lance recovering from a ruptured cruciate ligament, ill-fated end-of-season hero Brock Purdy fresh from elbow surgery, the 49ers were in a very uncertain situation for the start of the 2023 fiscal year. With the arrival of Darnold, Kyle Shanahan finds a player capable of directing his attack for the necessary time.

Selected in 3rd position in the 2018 draft, Sam Darnold never lived up to expectations. After 3 seasons at the Jets, the 25-year-old quarterback has spent the last two seasons at the Panthers. With a few ups and quite a few downs, he never made it to Carolina. In 2022, between injuries and being benched, he only played 6 games, throwing for 1143 yards, 7 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
