NFL Media reports that Brissett was indeed chosen by Jerod Mayo to be his team's starting quarterback. The coach reportedly announced it to his players.
Jacoby Brissett completed just 5 of 14 passes for 36 yards and no touchdowns in the preseason. But it was clearly his experience that made the difference. At 31, he has started 48 career games and played in 79 total games.
While his stats have never been incredible, he has the image of a clean pitcher who can lead an offense without hurting it. His record as a starter is still largely deficient, with 18 wins for 30 losses.
Drake Maye will wait
Selected in the third round of the last Draft, Drake Maye quickly achieved great things during the preparation games. His final record is 21/34 for 192 yards and 1 touchdown.
Except that in a poor squad, the new coach Jerod Mayo has clearly preferred to play for time and protect his rookie, whose potential means that he will sooner or later supplant Brissett. The question is when.
