Patriots: Bill O’Brien is back as offensive coordinator

The Patriots finally have an offensive coordinator. After a season of not officially naming anyone on the job and leaving play calls to Matt Patricia, Bill Belichick has decided to change his tune.

According to ESPN, Bill O’Brien has returned to New England, taking up the position of offensive coordinator. Functions he knows, since he occupied this role in 2011. He knows the Patriots well for having also occupied the functions of offensive assistant (2007), receivers coach (2008) and quarterbacks coach (2009-2010 ).

In 2011, under his command, the Patriots had the 3rd offense in the league in points scored and 2nd in yards gained. At the time, there was obviously Tom Brady, but also Wes Welker as the most productive receiver, Rob Gronkowski, Deion Branch and… Aaron Hernandez.

After the Patriots, O’Brien held the position of main coach of Penn State (2012-13) then of the Texans (2014-2020), before arriving with the university of Alabama in January 2021. He therefore worked a few weeks with Mac Jones, then drafted in April of the same year.
