It’s a first in history and the Chiefs quarterback is proud to be part of it
For the first time in history, the Super Bowl will see two black players compete for the most prestigious position in America’s favorite sport. Asked about this historic event at a press conference, Patrick Mahomes expressed his pride.
“To be on the front line and have two starting black quarterbacks in the Super Bowl, I think is special. I’ve learned more and more about the history of black quarterbacks since I’ve been in this league, and the guys who came before Jalen and me set the stage for us.
And now I’m happy that we can prepare it for the next generations. It’s going to be a great game between two great teams, and two great quarterbacks. So I’m looking forward to going out there and doing what it takes to win against a great team. »
The Chiefs quarterback insisted he sees the game as an opportunity to convince teams to give young black quarterbacks a chance.
“I think you can see it through history. When guys like Doug Williams, or Michael Vick, or Donovan McNabb play amazing football, it gives guys like Jalen or me a chance to get on an NFL team.
If we continue to prove that we can be amazing over time, I think it will open even more doors for young people who grow up wanting to be quarterbacks for an NFL franchise. It’s great to have a guy like Jalen on the other side because he’s a good guy, and obviously an amazing quarterback. »
To date, only Doug Williams, Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson have won the Super Bowl. If the Eagles win, Jalen Hurts would become the fourth. If the Chiefs win, Mahomes would become the first to win two.
