Austin Ekeler will not leave the Chargers. Not this season, anyway. ESPN reports that Los Angeles executives have added $2 million in performance bonuses to the runner’s contract. Something to calm the situation and convince him to stay.
The money isn’t guaranteed, but Ekeler will at least have a chance to bump up his compensation. His base salary in 2023 will be $6.25 million. Then the all-around runner will be free in March 2024.
Austin Ekeler is the handyman
Austin Ekeler is a key cog in the Chargers offense. Last season, he carried the ball 204 times, for 915 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also caught 107 passes for 722 yards and 5 other passes in the end zone.
After negotiations over a contract extension broke down earlier this year, the Chargers allowed him to look for a team that might be interested in a transfer. Finally, Los Angeles is doing much better than that, keeping its player against a few potential bounties.
The 28-year-old Ekeler hadn’t even been drafted when he arrived in the league in 2017. The Chargers then had the good idea to sign him.
