DeAndre Hopkins: New England was not at the level of Tennessee

If the Patriots and Titans were the main franchises competing for the services of DeAndre Hopkins (WR), the All-Pro receiver will eventually head south to reach Tennessee. Still, ESPN reports that Hopkins and New England were in contact throughout the free agency period, but it never resulted in an offer that satisfied both parties. According to Jeremy Fowler, the salary base offered by the Patriots had nothing to do with what the Titans put on the negotiating table. Far fewer guaranteed dollars and more performance bonuses, which pushed Hopkins into the arms of Mike Vrabel.

Now that he has found a new home, the star receiver has announced that he intends to prove this year that he is still part of the elite.

“I’ve always loved having people doubt or hate me, but I appreciate it even more now,” a vindictive Hopkins wrote on his Twitter account.

Jaguars: three years and bonuses for Evan Engram

The Jaguars had decided to apply the franchise tag on Evan Engram (TE) in order to keep one of the trusted targets for Trevor Lawrence (QB). And following negotiations with the club, the tight receiver was granted a 3-year contract to stay in Florida. NBC Sports has detailed the content of this agreement.

Engram receives a $12.5 million signing bonus plus 7.5 million options, then a guaranteed base salary of $2 million for 2023 and 2024. Each game will net him an additional $500,000, as does off-season bonuses. If the contract goes through to conclusion, the 2025 salary will amount to 14.75 million.

“From day one, it was exactly what I wanted,” Engram told the team’s website. “Of course the goal was to reach an agreement… I knew that I was ready for one or the other: to play under the tag, or to find an agreement. »

Transactions

– The Giants are looking to the USFL to deepen their roster. Thus, New York received Kyahva Tezino (LB, Pittsburgh Maulers) and Mark Thompson (RB, Houston Gamblers) for testing. (KPRC)

In short

– The Jets and the Browns will open the preseason ball at the Hall of Fame game on August 3. It is therefore hardly surprising that the two clubs are the first to open their training camps. Thus, New York will launch its summer activities on Wednesday July 19 (under the eye of the cameras of Hard Knocks), while Cleveland will do the same on Friday July 21.

– On Saturday, August 5, the Hall of Fame will welcome the nine new members of the NFL Hall of Fame, the class of 2023. In order of induction, the following will present themselves: Zach Thomas (LB), Ken Riley (CB, represented by his son Ken junior), DeMarcus Ware (OLB), Joe Klecko (DL), Chuck Howley (LB, represented by his son Scott), Darrelle Revis (CB), Don Coryell (HC, represented by his daughter Mindy), Ronde Barber ( CB), and finally Joe Thomas (LT).

– The legal adventures of the Commanders continue, a few days before the formalization of the sale of the franchise. This time it is Jason Friedman, former vice president of sales and customer relations, who is suing the club for defamation. He accuses the club of having attacked him personally and destroyed his professional reputation following his testimony to Congress concerning the financial indelicacy that the team would have practiced in its ticket office and with its subscribers. (ESPN)

– If Tom Brady (ex-QB) was known for his total investment in football, Kirk Cousins (QB, Vikings) decided to carve out moments of life outside of sport, even during the regular season. The Netflix series Quarterback teaches us that he refuses to work at least one day a week, a habit he took 8 years ago and which he was able to impose on his staff during his career.

LeVeon Bell: “I should never have left. I apologize. »

Coming off three Pro Bowl nominations, LeVeon Bell (ex-RB) made the decision in 2019 to strike all season to protest unsuccessful (from his perspective) negotiations with the Steelers. He eventually left Pennsylvania for New York and the dollars. However, when questioned by fans last weekend, he admits today that he mishandled the situation at the time and that he should not have left Pittsburgh.

“I never apologized to the fans for going on strike and leaving the Steelers. I never apologized. I mean, I apologize for letting the best fans in the world down,” Bell tweeted. “I should never have left. I apologize. I never should have left. I apologize. It’s my fault. »

Dak Prescott: ‘I won’t throw 10 interceptions this year’

Even though he missed a third of the regular season, Dak Prescott (QB, Cowboys) threw 15 interceptions last year (plus 2 more in the playoffs against San Francisco). That total was the worst of his career and the league. But the Texans pitcher is confident that these mistakes will not happen again, thanks to his personal work and that of his receivers in recent months.

“I know who I am, and you can go back and take half of those pitches off,” Prescott told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I’m not saying it’s the fault of the receivers, but if you take away half, we can start talking about the ones that nobody talks about… Some are for the offense, that they understand exactly where we are. Mike [McCarthy, HC] does a great job with the guys. They know where to stand, why, when they are being watched. It’s gonna be a big leap. I will not throw 10 interceptions this year. »

Kenny Clark: “The Packers are optimistic”

With Aaron Rodgers (QB) left on the Gotham side, expectations for the Packers are not extremely high this year, in a division promised to resurgent Lions or Vikings who know how to win in the regular season. It will all come down to the development of Jordan Love (QB), which suits Kenny Clark perfectly (DT). The lineman accepts the observers’ disbelief and thinks the team will feed off of it.

“100 percent, but that’s cool,” Clark said on The Zach Gelb Show. ” I like this. It’s one of the first off-seasons where we don’t really get credit, no love. Everyone says Aaron decides win or lose, we like that. We’ll take it. When we get to week 1, when the season kicks off, we’ll see how it all unfolds. We are optimistic. »
