Caleb Williams is still without a contract
First pick in the last Draft, Caleb Williams (QB, Bears) has not, to date, signed his rookie contract. Questioned during an event organized in Chicago for his Caleb Cares Foundationthe quarterback did not seem overly concerned.
“I don't deal with that stuff. My lawyers and my representatives, the Bears management, everybody deals with that. I'm not the one who handles that.”
The rookie contract negotiations are limited to a few things, such as bonus payment deadlines and potential compensation. However, the quarterback is not represented by an NFL-certified agent, and the Bears are not allowed to negotiate with anyone other than Williams. Additionally, Caleb Williams' teammate, WR Rome Odunze, has not signed his contract either. A situation that could quickly become problematic if it drags on.
Chicago's rookies are called up this Tuesday for the start of training camp. Subsequently, the first preseason game will be held on August 1st against the Texans. Deadlines that seem to motivate Caleb Williams.
“You get to the end of the break, you get to practice and you’re ready to play. I’m very excited, very happy to be back in Chicago and start working. We’re only three weeks away from the opener.”
Calvin Johnson Honored by Lions
The Detroit Lions announced Monday that former star wide receiver Calvin Johnson will be inducted into the Pride of the Lions. The ceremony will take place during halftime of the Sept. 30 game against the Seahawks.
The Pride of the Lions is a permanent exhibit at Ford Field that honors the greatest players in franchise history. In 135 games and nine seasons, Johnson was the Lions' all-time leading receiver in receptions (731), receiving yards (11,619) and touchdowns (83).
Patrick Mahomes best quarterback according to ESPN
ESPN reveals a little more of its annual ranking by position. Today, it's the quarterbacks' turn with a top 10 that will make more than one person react. Like last year, Patrick Mahomes (QB, Chiefs) wins the jackpot. He is followed by the same two competitors, namely Joe Burrow (QB, Bengals) and Josh Allen (QB, Bills). MVP of the season, Lamar Jackson (QB, Ravens) climbs three places in one year but fails to reach the podium (4th). We also note the thunderous entrance of CJ Stroud (QB, Texans) who ranks 7th in his first season. On the surprise side, the absence of Jalen Hurts (QB, Eagles) as well as the presence in 5th position of Matthew Stafford (QB, Rams). Finally, and even if he has only attempted one pass this season, Aaron Rodgers (QB, Jets) maintains a solid 8th place.
Injuries
– Nick Chubb (RB, Browns) is doing well. After seriously injuring his knee last September, his recovery seems to be going well and a return for the 2024 season is likely. The proof? He posted a video on social media where he lifts 250 kilos.
– Keaton Mitchell (RB, Ravens) was placed on the injured reserve list before the start of training camps (PUP List). As a reminder, the runner suffered a torn ACL after week 15 of the 2023 season. (NFL Media)
Transactions
– Kicker Dustin Hopkins signs a 3-year contract extension with the Browns. The amount of this contract is $16 million. The player thus becomes one of the 5 highest-paid kickers in the league. In the 2023 season, he posted 92% shooting success. (ESPN)
In short
– After missing the entire 2023 season due to pericarditis that he has been carrying around for several years, KJ Hamler (WR, Bills) is hoping to bounce back. Now with the Bills, the 25-year-old receiver is looking to become a playmaker in Buffalo.
“I want to be the guy they look to on third downs and kick returns. I'm here to do whatever I can to be a spark for the team.”
– With the exception of the Chiefs and Raiders, the other 30 franchises will participate in joint training sessions that will take place before the preseason games. (NFL)
– Terrell Davis (ex-HB) had a bad end to his flight from Denver to California. Following an altercation with a member of the flight crew, he found himself handcuffed and taken for questioning. However, his version of events prevailed against the authorities. The Hall of Famer says he is publicly humiliated and embarrassed by this unfortunate episode.
– The Argentina-Colombia Copa America match left its mark in Miami. The Dolphins' Hard Rock Stadium suffered “significant damage” as it was mobbed by ticketless fans, and some fans clashed with police outside.
– Former Buccaneers wide receiver Deven Thompkins will not be suspended by the NFL. The league says it does not have enough evidence to suspend him. The receiver was publicly accused by his ex-wife of domestic violence in a video posted on social media. Thompkins was fired a week after the video was posted.
– A judge has ruled that Vikings WR Justin Jefferson is the father of his ex-girlfriend Andrea Galea's baby. The order requires the receiver and Galea to share legal custody of the child. He will also have to provide financial support and health care to his ex-wife.
