Significant progress for an 18-game NFL season

NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell told the Washington Post that discussions have taken place with the NFL regarding an 18-game season.

“We’ve talked at a very high level, superficially, and recognized that this is something we should talk about. We should really dig into it and understand what’s going on in the decision-making process. Where does the 18th game come from? I think just take it, for example, in one of the pre-season games in August. Those are details that really need to be clarified. But again, there are other economic, health and safety issues that also need to be clarified for our members before there’s an agreement.”

While the league has long proclaimed its desire for an 18-game season, the NFLPA has so far remained rather reserved. The players' association is waiting for clear guarantees on key points in particular.

“Our members are interested in a myriad of things before we even talk about the number of games: health, field surface, how pre-season activities are conducted, the percentage of annual compensation that is guaranteed… So there are a lot of things to sort out before we get to the 18th game.”

Showing restraint, Lloyd nevertheless said he was “excited” by Roger Goodell's recent statements on the subject. The bulk of the work is ahead of him, as nearly half of the players (48.5%) were already opposed to the 17-game season in 2021.

Haason Reddick skips training camp…

The list of players “on strike” is growing by the day. After Jordan Love yesterday, today it is Haason Reddick (EGDE, Jets) who refuses to join his teammates on the field. Entering the final year of his contract and awaiting an extension, the pass rusher had already skipped all offseason training, including mandatory activities in June. He is due to receive $14.5 million.

Arriving in the offseason from Philadelphia, Reddick signed with the Eagles for three years and $45 million in 2022. With 50.5 sacks over the last four seasons (4th most in the NFL), he feels he deserves more. His annual earnings average of $15 million per season is only 20th in the league for his position.

…same thing for CeeDee Lamb

The Dallas Cowboys reportedly prioritized WR Ceedee Lamb's contract extension over QB Dak Prescott's. That's not enough. According to Ian Rapoportconfirmed by ESPN, Ceedee Lamb is not reporting for the start of Dallas' training camp. A situation that comes as no surprise given that the receiver had already skipped preseason activities.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Lamb is set to make $18 million. With recent extensions from other receivers around the league, it's a given that the player wants more than $30 million per year. Last year, the receiver caught 135 passes for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns. It was statistically his best season in the NFL.

Michael Gallup Retires

After signing a one-year, $3 million contract last April, Michael Gallup (WR, Raiders) announced his retirement. On the eve of the first day of training camp in Las Vegas, he was expected to become the team's third receiver.

Gallup, 28, had participated in organized activities and the Raiders' minicamp during the offseason. In the NFL for six years, he caught 266 passes for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns with the Dallas Cowboys.

Amari Cooper Gets Raise

Busy news for receivers, as Amari Cooper (WR, Browns) showed up to camp with a smile on his face. And for good reason, the player just received a nice raise. In addition to the $20 million he was owed, which has become fully guaranteed, the receiver will receive an additional $5 million for the final year of his lease with Cleveland. However, no years have been added to Cooper's contract, which should make him a free agent in March 2025.

Matthew Stafford gets contract restructuring

Drama is avoided on the Los Angeles side. Unhappy with his current contract, Matthew Stafford (QB, Rams) was pushing to obtain a larger guaranteed share. As a reminder, the quarterback had 3 years left on his contract, for a total value of $94 million, of which only 31 were guaranteed. The situation has been resolved, and the player is indeed present for the start of training camp. The Rams have not yet revealed the new contract figures.

Transactions

– A few days after making his return to the Dolphins group, Emmanuel Ogbah (EDGE) signs a one-year contract. The player should quickly find his feet, given that he spent the last 4 seasons in Miami. He comes to replace Shaquill Barrett, who retired this weekend.

– As the camps approach, several players without contracts are invited by the franchises. This is the case of Jakeem Grant (WR/KR) who trained with the New York Giants this Monday. Still on the East Coast but further South, the experienced Jerry Jacobs (CB) will visit the Panthers facilities.

The main signings of the day: Jacob Eason (QB, Packers), Duke Shelley (CB, Vikings), Kyric McGowan (WR, Dolphins), Julien Davenport (OT, Falcons)

Injuries

– Cooper DeJean (CB, Eagles) is expected to miss three weeks of practice. The rookie cornerback injured his hamstring during an offseason workout. He will begin training camp on the non-football injury (NFI) list.

They are active, but placed on the injured reserve (PUP List): Odell Beckham Jr. (WR, Dolphins), David Long Jr. (LB, Dolphins), Kolton Miller (OT, Raiders), Jalen Guyton (WR, Raiders), Jackson Powers-Johnson (OG, Raiders), Tyler Higbee (TE, Rams), Dre Greenlaw (LB, 49ers), Talanoa Hufanga (S, 49ers)

They are placed on the non-football injury list (NFI List): Trent Brown (OT, Bengals), Cooper DeJean (CB, Eagles), Antonio Gibson (RB, Patriots)

In short

– The Houston Texans announced that they have already sold out their season tickets for next year, a sign that expectations are rising, as the franchise was the only one without a single game on national television last year.

– One day, one uniform. It’s the turn of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to announce a “Throwback” uniform for the upcoming season. It will be in week 8 when they host the Falcons, with their “Creamsicle” uniform. Already worn last season, it consists of an orange jersey and socks, white pants, and the white “Bucco Bruce” helmet. The Bucs wore this uniform from their inaugural season in 1976, and until the 1996 season.

– Still on the Tampa side, the franchise has just placed Randy Gregory (EDGE) on the reserve list. The player did not show up for the start of training camp on Tuesday, and had missed the mandatory minicamp last month. His coach Todd Bowles confirmed that these absences are not justified.
