Jordan Love out of camp until he signs new contract

A revelation last season in Wisconsin, Jordan Love (QB, Packers) is skipping the start of training camp. Present at a press conference this Monday, Brian Gutekunst, general manager of the Packers, indicated that the player will not practice until an agreement regarding his contract extension is reached. The manager was optimistic, however, indicating that Jordan Love's absence from training will be brief.

“I think we will quickly find an agreement, but again, you never know. We are working very hard to achieve this, it is very important for us.”

After a sluggish start to 2023, Jordan Love exploded from Thanksgiving on, throwing for 4,132 yards, 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in the regular season. He also led Green Bay to a stunning victory over the Cowboys in the playoffs before falling to the 49ers in the next round. He is set to earn a base salary of $10.5 million this season.

New position for Kadarius Toney at the Chiefs…

Struggling last season, Kadarius Toney (WR, Chiefs) is far from guaranteed a spot on the Chiefs' final roster. Anything he can do this summer to show the coaches that he can help will be welcome. And that's good news, Andy Reid seems to have new plans for him! Since the start of training camp, Toney has been participating in running back drills in addition to his receiver reps. When asked about it, the coach remained very evasive about how the Chiefs view him.

“He worked today. He did a good job when he was on the field, and we'll see. Just like the other guys, he's competing. We'll see how he does.”

After a cataclysmic game against the Lions to start last season, Toney had gradually disappeared from the radar. He finished the 2023 season with just 27 receptions, 169 yards and 1 touchdown.

…who might try Hollywood Brown as a returner

Andy Reid is definitely very inspired with his receivers at the start of camp. During his press conference on Sunday, the coach mentioned new tasks for rookie Hollywood Brown (WR).

“Yeah, he could play special teams. We give everybody a chance, we asked him to do punt returns again and he wants to. He wants to play and he has a great attitude.”

These are surprising statements when you consider that the player has never returned a single punt since arriving in the league in 2019. Digging deeper, Brown also did not return a punt at Oklahoma. You have to go back to his high school years to find a record of the player returning kicks, while he was at College of the Canyons.

Joe Burrow back in business

Injured in the wrist in week 11 against the Ravens, Joe Burrow (QB, Bengals) had to undergo surgery and then rehabilitation. Back for the activities organized in May and June, the quarterback had taken it easy and had not thrown in each session. According to his president Mike Brown, that is now ancient history.

“I think he’s ready to go. I watched him in the offseason and he looked good. He could throw accurately. He could throw hard and far. He could do what he had to do in all areas. He’s the heart of the team and he’s the one who’s going to be the key.”

A little more restraint from his coach Zac Taylor, however, mentioning a personalized management of the schedule in order to prevent new injuries. He also did not wish to give details on the workload that the team leader will receive during his first days at camp.

Transactions

– Guard Greg Van Roten is on trial with the Giants. Last season, he played for the Las Vegas Raiders. The 34-year-old could be getting his second New York franchise, having played for the Jets in 2020. (ESPN)

Today's top signings: Tyree Gillespie (S, Chiefs), Ike Botteger (OL, Lions), Kevin Austin (WR, Saints)

Injuries

– Daniel Jones (QB, Giants) will be back for the start of Giants training camp this Wednesday. This is the player himself who assures to the microphone of Jordan Raanan of ESPN, being reassuring following his injury to the ACL of the knee.

“I feel good, ready to go, ready to go for training camp. I'm looking forward to next Wednesday.”

– The Chicago Bears activate Gerald Everett (TE). The player, who arrived in the offseason for a 2-year contract, had been placed on the non-football injury list (NFI List) last Friday.

They are active, but placed on the injured reserve (PUP List): TJ Hockenson (TE, Vikings), NaJee Thompson (S, Vikings)

They are placed on the non-football injury list (NFI List): DeWayne McBride (HB, Vikings)

In short

– Amarius Mims (OT, Bengals) has just signed his rookie contract with the Cincinnati franchise. The latter extends over a period of 4 years for an amount of 15.37 million dollars, including 7.99 million in signing bonuses. Now, all the rookies drafted in the first round have signed their contracts.

– In the middle of training camp, the Chicago Bears let their new safety, Jonathan Owens, go for a week. Owens will accompany his wife, gymnastics superstar Simone Biles, during the Paris Olympics.

– The New York Jets are also succumbing to the “Throwback” uniform trend. On “Monday Night Football” Week 6 against the Bills, the team will wear a white uniform reminiscent of the one from Super Bowl III, as well as the look the team sported from 1998 to 2018. They will also wear the same helmet as on those occasions, with a gray grid similar to the one worn during their Super Bowl victory over the Colts. The Jets will also wear alternate uniforms in Week 9 for the game against the Texans.
