Jacoby Jones has passed away
Former Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones died Sunday at the age of 40. Described as funny and cheerful by his former teammates, Jones is best known for being one of the heroes of Super Bowl XLVII against the 49ers. That day, he scored a touchdown reception and another on a 108-yard kick return. He remains the only player to have achieved such a feat in the modern era of Super Bowls.
Having played for 4 NFL teams (Texans, Ravens, Steelers, Chargers), Jacoby Jones made his mark with the Ravens during the 2012 season. In addition to the Super Bowl, he was named to the first team All Pro as a kick returner, as well as to the Pro Bowl. In his career, he scored 23 touchdowns, including 14 as a receiver.
Jordan Addison arrested
Jordan Addison (WR, Vikings) was arrested by police this Friday evening for drunken driving. According to the Los Angeles Daily Newsthe 22-year-old reportedly fell asleep at the wheel of a white Rolls Royce. The vehicle was blocking an entire lane of a highway near Los Angeles Airport, where the player was for the premiere of “Receiver,” a series that follows his teammate Justin Jefferson. After spending two hours in police custody, the Viking was released on Friday night. Police have not released Addison's blood alcohol level, as the limit in California is 0.08 percent.
This is not the receiver's first attempt. Last July, he was arrested driving a Lamborghini for speeding while he was on his way to his team's training camp.
TJ Watt and Micah Parsons favorites for the title of best defender of the season
DraftKings.com has released a list of players likely to win the 2024 NFL Defensive Draft of the Year award. The favorites include TJ Watt (OLB, Steelers) and Micah Parsons (EDGE, Cowboys).
Nick Bosa (EDGE, 49ers) and Maxx Crosby (EDGE, Raiders) are just behind. Last year's winner, Myles Garrett (EDGE, Browns) is only 5th, just ahead of Aidan Hutchinson (EDGE, Lions).
Kyle Pitts tight end and receiver
1026 yards in 2021, and almost as many over the last 2 seasons. Kyle Pitts' career is slowing down. However, his new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson is ambitious with his player.
“He’s learning two different positions, sometimes tight end, sometimes receiver. So he’s still got a lot of work to do. I’m just looking forward to seeing him continue to be comfortable in the system. We’re going to move him around a lot. We’re going to use him as a blocker, as a receiver. We’re going to use him everywhere.”
Sometimes neglected by Arthur Smith (and perhaps frustrated), the tight end will have another pitcher in 2024 (Kirk Cousins) to be able to match the numbers of his rookie season. All this on condition of having a healthy offseason, and without injuries.
Trent Williams and Zack Martin acclaimed
This weekend, ESPN released the list of the best offensive line players, as rated by all 32 NFL teams' front offices.
On the tackle side, Trent Williams (OT, 49ers) still comes out on top for the 3rd consecutive year. He is ahead of Penei Sewell (OT, Lions) and Laremy Tunsil (OT, Texans). On the podium last year, Tristan Wirfs (OT, Buccaneers) is 4th. In the rest of the top 10, we note the presence of the 2 Eagles tackles with Lane Johnson (5th) and Jordan Mailata (7th).
On the guard and center side, Zack Martin (OL, Cowboys) comes out on top, ahead of Chris Lindstrom (OL, Falcons) and Quentin Nelson (OL, Colts). In the rest of the top 10, we find in particular the 3 Chiefs starters: guards Joe Thuney (4th) and Trey Smith (9th) and center Creed Humphrey (7th).
Transactions
– Tee Higgins (WR, Bengals) will be a free agent in 2025. This Monday will mark the final date for signing long-term contracts for players who have received the franchise tag. NFL Media announces that the receiver will not sign a long-term contract with the Bengals. He will therefore play his 5th year in the NFL under a one-year contract worth $21 million. He is the only player in this case, since the tagged players have all signed long-term contracts. (NFL Media)
– Adam Thielen (WR, Panthers) could have been a Chiefs player last season. Invited to a golf tournament in Nevada, he says the interest wasn’t mutual. On one hand, the Chiefs won another Super Bowl. On the other, Thielen had a great season with the Panthers, with 103 receptions, 1,017 yards and four touchdowns. (Starcade Media)
– Kyle Juszczyk (FB, 49ers) reportedly felt hurt when the 49ers offered to cut part of his salary. While the player understands that this is a business deal, he wants to be paid what he is worth, even claiming to be the best fullback in the league. However, the player wants to stay in San Francisco, believing he is on the best team in the league and with a good chance of winning the Super Bowl. Juszczyk has a 2-year, $9 million contract. The same was asked of Arik Armstead, but the player declined and left for the Jaguars. (NFL Media)
Trevor Lawrence: “The best of my football is ahead of me”
Fresh off being awarded a big contract by his franchise, Trevor Lawrence (QB, Jaguars) says the investment made in him will pay off. NFL Networkthe quarterback says his new contract will allow him to play the best football of his career, and that the current team is the best he has ever known.
“The best days are definitely ahead of us. Individually, I think I’m still a long way from playing my best football. That’s what’s coming for me now so I’m really excited about that. The team we have this year is really good, I think it’s the best team we’ve had since I’ve been here, and I’m looking forward to seeing it come together through training camp and the regular season.”
After a rookie season disrupted by a bad context, Trevor Lawrence shone during the 2022 season. That season, he posted 4,113 yards and 30 touchdowns, guiding his team to the AFC division final. The following season was much more complicated, failing to help his team qualify for the playoffs.
