Lesser penalties for non-NFL betting and higher penalties for betting on NFL games, NFL changes its rules
Change in rules regarding betting and players in the NFL.
The league and players’ union have agreed to revamp the rules. From now on the sanctions linked to betting will be as follows:
– at least one season of suspension if a player bets on a match
– at least two seasons of suspension if a player bets on a match involving his team
– if a player bets on his team’s premises on a match (non-NFL): two games for the first violation, six games for the second, at least one season for the third
– if a player attempts to fix a game, he will be banned from the NFL
– if a player gives “confidential” information, he will risk at least one season of suspension.
The league and the players’ union have therefore decided to increase the penalties linked to the NFL and to “reduce” those for non-NFL bets.
Note that this decision results in ending the suspensions of Jameson Williams (receiver, Lions) and Nicholas Petit-Frere (offensive lineman, Titans). Both players were suspended six games for sports betting. They will therefore be able to return in week 4.
