[NCAA] Week 9 – Wilfried Pene takes his chance

Every Sunday, the DNA of Sports editorial team offers you an update on the NCAA championship and the players eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft.

The revelation of week 9 NCAA – Wilfried Pene (DT, Virginia Tech)

His game (against Georgia Tech): 5 tackles, 1 sack

His goal is the 2025 Draft, and the Frenchman is giving himself the means to get there.

Wilfried Pene had a very convincing match against Georgia Tech in an ACC conference duel. He constantly puts pressure on the interior offensive line, and is the only one to record a sack at the end of the first quarter. Virginia Tech signs a great defensive victory 21-6, recording their 3rd consecutive victory.

Wilfried Pene is starting his 4th season at Virginia Tech, and has been a starter since the start of the season. Regular since the start of the season, he does effective work in the shadows on the defensive line. Unfortunately, his rating is not very high today. It must be said that many of his teammates are candidates to be drafted (Powell-Ryland, Delane, Penables).

However, by continuing to perform well and regularly, he could create a surprise despite the strong vintage at his position that is coming.

Revelation of Week 9 – Honorable Mentions

  • Jake Retzlaff (QB, BYU): 16/24, 14 carries, 266 yards, 3 touchdowns
  • Damian Martinez (RB, Miami (FL)): 15 carries, 248 yards, 2 touchdowns
  • JJ Jones (WR, North Carolina): 5 receptions, 129 yards, 2 touchdowns
  • Daniel Jackson (WR, Minnesota): 9 receptions, 117 yards, 2 touchdowns
  • Jordan Oladokun (CB, Bowling Green): 3 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 touchdown

He doesn't have the same hype as Zach Wilson (QB, Broncos). However, he deserves it given his performances this season. Jake Retzlaff is the brains behind a still-undefeated BYU team. The quarterback should probably stay one more year in the NCAA. But, he should get more attention from NFL scouts.

Is Damian Martinez back? For once, it's not Cam Ward, but another player who shines in a new victory for the Miami Hurricanes. The powerful runner scores 2 touchdowns, and offers a profile that could interest a team lacking depth at the running back position.

This year's crop of receivers is not up to par with previous years. Too bad for the teams lacking a number 1 target. However, these teams should take a look at North Carolina or Minnesota. JJ Jones and Daniel Jackson are different profiles. One is great, the other has a great knowledge of lines. Regardless of the profile, the result is the same: 2 touchdowns and victory for their respective teams.

Finally, Bowling Green surprises us. Not by the quality of their NCAA season (50% victories), but by the quality of the players they can offer. Tight end Harold Fannin Jr. is the headliner, but the defense also has its headliner. His name is Jordan Oladokun, and is the brother of quarterback Chris Oladokun, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Could have been cited: Max Brosmer (QB, Minnesota), Kaimon Rucker (EDGE, North Carolina), Chandler Martin (LB, Memphis), Coleman Owen (WR, Ohio), Tanner Koziol (TE, Ball State), Tysheem Johnson ( CB, Oregon), Darrell Jackson Jr. (DT, Florida State)

NCAA Player of the Week 9 – Travis Hunter (WR/CB, Colorado)

His game (against Cincinnati): 9 receptions, 153 yards, 2 touchdowns and 4 passes defended

Words fail us to describe Travis Hunter's match this week. Hard to beat, he still played more than 100 snaps in a game that Colorado easily won against Cincinnati 34-23. Which makes Colorado a Bowl eligible university.

The player can play anywhere and can be decisive. However, what we don't know is that he is polite in his actions. Incredible receptionsfit, sure hands, and all that accompanied by a career-high in receiving yards.

But no, Travis Hunter is not satisfied with a record, he is obliged to do more. We must not forget that he also knows how to defend. With 4 passes defended, he also broke a career record in this area. The road to the title Heisman Trophy (best college player) is still strewn with pitfalls, but he is on the right track.

Colorado can still believe in the playoffs. For that, they need a big Travis Hunter. No doubt, the player is ready for the NFL. Impatience is growing for fans who can't wait to see what number 12 Colorado can come up with every Sunday.

Players of the Week 9 – Honorable Mentions

  • Shedeur Sanders (QB, Colorado): 25/30, 324 yards, 3 touchdowns
  • Tez Johnson (WR, Oregon): 6 receptions, 102 yards, 1 touchdown
  • Tetairoa McMillan (WR, Arizona): 10 receptions, 202 yards, 1 touchdown
  • Colston Loveland (TE, Michigan): 6 receptions, 67 yards, 2 touchdowns
  • Princely Umanmielen (EDGE, Ole Miss): 3 tackles, 2 sacks

Obviously, Travis Hunter cannot shine without a very good Shedeur Sanders. The quarterback had a solid game with no mistakes. This gives a confidence boost according to him. This also gives a boost to his rating in the Draft to be the first choice.

We talk about him in the topic on Bo Nix. Will he follow him to the Broncos? In any case, receiver Tez Johnson is doing everything to be called up in the first 3 rounds. His match against Illinois is an example of determination.

He is the only one to save in the doldrums of Arizona, which suffers a 4th defeat in a row. Tetairoa McMillan finally finds the path to the touchdown after his first 4 in a single game. A top performance which should make him the first receiver called up next April.

Michigan does not have a successor for JJ McCarthy (QB, Vikings), but may have one for Luke Schoonmaker (TE, Cowboys). Colston Loveland takes care of scoring (almost) all of Michigan's points during the victorious derby for the Wolverines against the Michigan State Spartans.

Finally, the vintage of pass rushers is of high quality. Each week passes without another player being able to claim the first round. Coming from the University of Florida, Princely Umanmielen (1m93, 116 kilos) is a powerful and very lively player. His match maintains Ole Miss's chances for the playoffs.

Could have been mentioned: Quinn Ewers (QB, Texas), Miller Moss (QB, USC), Omarion Hampton (RB, North Carolina), Kaleb Johnson (RB, Iowa), Savion Williams (WR, TCU), Jordan Hancock (CB , Ohio State), JT Tuimoloau (EDGE, Ohio State), Ashton Gillote (EDGE, Louisville), Jihaad Campbell (LB, Alabama), Malachi Moore (CB, Alabama), Bradyn Swinson (EDGE, LSU), Kyren Lacy (WR , LSU), Aireontae Ersery (OT, Minnesota), Jaylen Reed (S, Penn State)

Week 9 NCAA Flop – Luther Burden III (WR, Missouri)

His game (at Alabama): 2 carries, 3 receptions, 18 yards

2 of Drew Pyne's (QB, Missouri) 3 interceptions are towards his direction. In his defense, the ball is so badly placed that the receiver cannot perform miracles.

Despite this, Luther Burden III's 2024 season is turning into a disaster compared to last season. The receiver is not even the best on his team in receiving yards despite 6 touchdowns in 8 games. The observation that we can make is that for the moment, he is far from having the level of a future NFL player to start every week.

On a struggling team like Missouri was this week, a player of his caliber needs to be able to get his team out of trouble. Afterwards, Missouri's sluggish offensive system this season does not help, while the offensive staff did not change in the offseason.

We cannot take away his undeniable qualities, namely speed and explosiveness. However, this season, Burden shows more faults than qualities. Among these faults, sometimes nonchalant behavior, and hands that are unreliable.

Could have been mentioned: Garrett Nussmeier (QB, LSU), Conner Weigman (QB, Texas A&M), TreVeyon Henderson (RB, Ohio State), Emeka Egbuka (WR, Ohio State), Abdul Carter (EDGE, Penn State), Kaden Prather (WR, Maryland), Emery Jones Jr. (OT, LSU), Will Campbell (OT, LSU), Shilo Sanders (S, Colorado)

NCAA Week 9 Summary

The battle to reach the NCAA playoffs rages on. The ranked teams must therefore no longer be allowed to make mistakes.

Oregon (1) is respected at home against Illinois (20) 38-9, and remains undefeated. Just like Penn State (3) which barely beats Wisconsin 28-13. The bad news is the injury to Drew Allar one week before the clash against Ohio State (4). The latter do not convince offensively. Fortunately, the defense was there to do the job in a narrow 21-17 victory against the Nebraska of former Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule.

Among the teams still undefeated, we therefore have BYU (11) but also Miami (FL) (6) and Indiana (13). BYU is even alone at the top of the Big 12 conference. Miami (FL) is under threat from Clemson in the ACC conference. Indiana is neck and neck with Oregon in the Big Ten Conference.

Texas (5) and Alabama (15) are on the path to redemption. The Longhorns do the job not without difficulty on the Vanderbilt lawn (25). The Crimson Tide managed to keep Missouri (21) to 0 points. The 2 SEC teams are relaunching for the race for the conference finals. An SEC conference dominated by Texas A&M (14). The Aggies have LSU in a crazy atmosphere (38-23). Replacement quarterback Marcel Reed (not eligible for the 2025 Draft) is the big man of the match.

Two other teams are relaunching themselves in the race for the playoffs. Ole Miss (18) and Notre Dame (12) escape from the traps of Oklahoma and Navy (24). Kansas State (16) needs a field goal to defeat Kansas. A new touchdown from Ashton Jeanty allows Boise State (17) to win over UNLV.

How to win a game with 3 interceptions and 6 fumbles without causing turnovers? Ask SMU (22) who has Duke after overtime. Finally, we forget a team that is still undefeated. Aaron Donald's former university (ex-Rams) Pittsburgh (19) takes advantage of 5 interceptions (with 3 TDs) from Kyle McCord (QB, Syracuse) to keep some hope of reaching the playoffs.

Week 9 Action

It was the week of fake field goals in the Big 12 conference in the NCAA. Obviously, Dan Campbell (HC, Lions) makes his mark. The first video is from another derby, the Texas derby between Texas Tech and TCU. This touchdown scored by the Red Raiders did not prevent the Horned Frogs from winning. The second video shows one of the reasons for the fall of the Arizona Wildcats. Hopefully this can inspire the NFL in a few hours.
