Mike McDaniel: “Tua Tagovailoa can't just think about his health”

Tua Tagovailoa (QB, Dolphins) made headlines during the meeting between Miami and the Rams. And not for a good reason unfortunately. After throwing an interception, the quarterback tried to tackle the player… with his head. The action is obviously causing discussion given the player's history of concussions. He also missed a large part of the season since he did not play between September 13 and October 27 for this reason. This time, Tagovailoa escaped without concussion but the management of his game and his way of protecting himself raises questions. However, he took the question as a joke, since he joked about his “bad tackling technique”. His coach Mike McDaniel didn't seem much more worried.

“I didn't waste time telling him anything. » he said according to a Dolphins transcript (PFT). “He just can't think about his ability to stay healthy when he has the ball, which is also the case during a tackle. I told him not to close his eyes next time. I think he could also avoid this by not throwing the ball to the other team, which he also knows. There are always things to improve on and he really learned a lesson today. »

It is obvious that while playing football, Tua Tagovailoa will be exposed even if he does not take any risks. And Miami would certainly like him to avoid putting himself in danger. But the words of the quarterback and his coach can leave you speechless given the seriousness of the situation. Tua Tagovailoa has already suffered numerous concussions and his long-term health is obviously at stake. Should we laugh about it and wait for the next one to really take action? From a sporting point of view, it is certain that the Dolphins cannot do without him since they have won two games since his return and none in his absence. But the field should not take on subjects as important as that of concussions in the NFL.
