Chicago Bears trade running back Khalil Herbert to Cincinnati Bengals, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The Bears receive a 2025 7th round pick in exchange for the runner.
Khalil Herbert was in the final year of his rookie contract with Chicago, and he sat out the last two games. An effective runner since his arrival in Illinois, he no longer seemed to fit into Matt Eberflus' plans this season. Left behind by rookie D'Andre Swift, he has only carried the ball 8 times this season, for a total of 16 yards and a touchdown.
A win-win exchange?
It's a move that makes sense considering the Bears weren't likely to re-sign Khalil Herbert this offseason. General manager Ryan Poles thus obtains a late Draft choice in exchange for a player who no longer has a place in the system. On the Cincinnati side, Khalil Herbert comes to strengthen the backfield following Zack Moss' neck injury. Moss missed Sunday's win over the Raiders and coach Zac Taylor said he would be out indefinitely. Herbert should thus have the second workload behind Chase Brown. The main person concerned seems delighted in any case:
