Josh McDaniels was offensive coordinator of the Patriots from 2006 to 2008. Then from 2012 to 2021. Here he is back for a third round.
ESPN reports that New England will rehire McDaniels as offensive coordinator. He will therefore join the staff of Mike Vrabel, new head coach of the franchise.
The two men know each other well, since McDaniels was a defensive assistant with the Pats in 2002 and 2003 when Vrabel played linebacker.
Josh McDaniels had a job interview on Tuesday. New England had also spoken to Thomas Brown (passing game coordinator, Bears) and Marcus Brady (passing game coordinator, Chargers) for the same position.
Josh McDaniels, Life Coordinator
At 48 years old, Josh McDaniels returns to the position that seems to suit him best: that of offensive coordinator. Because between his stints in New England, his experiences as head coach in Denver (2009-2010) and Las Vegas (2022-2023) turned into a disaster.
His mission is now to support the development of Drake Maye, quarterback of the future and almost the only satisfaction for the Patriots in 2024.
In McDaniels' 13 seasons as the Patriots' offensive coordinator, the team finished outside the Top 10 in points scored only once. For yards gained, it's less clear. Five of the thirteen seasons finished outside the Top 14. Particularly the last three: Tom Brady's final campaign and the two that followed without him.
With Las Vegas, McDaniels' attacks didn't come close to the Top 10 either. Like Bill Belichick before him, he could be (a little) judged by his history with Brady.
