Giants – Patriots (10-7): end of the Mac Jones era… again

To say that the 2 teams were going to play 15 more minutes, but Chad Ryland decided that it was necessary to end this match which will not go down in history.

New York Giants (4-8) – New England Patriots (2-9): 10-7

In New York, this match between the Giants and the Patriots is synonymous with a bonus in the event of… defeat. Invigorated by their victory at the Commanders, the Giants will try to string together a second consecutive victory for the first time this season. Resting last week, the Patriots will try to save what remains of their season, and stop a negative series of 3 consecutive defeats.

Despite the lost season, lessons can be learned from this match. At the Patriots, the Mac Jones experience (12/21, 89 yards, 2 INT) may have come to an end, after a cataclysmic first period. It will be difficult to understand if he ends the season as a starter, barring major circumstances.

As for the Giants, this 2nd consecutive victory bears the mark of the defense, author of 3 interceptions. Limiting errors, Tommy DeVito (17/25, 191 yards, TD) wins his 2nd game as a starter. Also note, the first game with more than 100 yards receiving for another rookie, Jalin Hyatt (5 REC, 109 yards). And that’s all we’re going to remember from an afternoon of poor football quality on the New York side.

Mac Jones in distress

We had to wait until the end of the first half to see the first points of this match, with Giants receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who broke a tackle, after a pass from Tommy DeVito. Before that, both teams put on a boring show. In total, this gives 9 punts, 4 fumbles, and generous attacks.

At the very start of the match, a fumble by Tommy DeVito annihilated the Giants’ hopes of scoring the first points of this match. On the Patriots side, it’s worse. In difficulty, sacked 3 times, Mac Jones threw 2 interceptions, and seemed lost. One is of no consequence, the other is, with Hodgins’ touchdown, while the attack was on a good offensive series. Finally, he even committed a fumble that could have been costly. Luckily, it was covered up by one of his teammates.

With a record of two interceptions, Bill Belichick has seen enough, and replaces Mac Jones with Bailey Zappe.

A field goal is enough

This change immediately paid off in the second half, with a good series from Bailey Zappe who completed his first 6 passes. At the conclusion of this one, we find Rhamondre Stevenson (21 races, 98 yards, TD) in the race.

Then, we fall back into the mediocrity of the first period. The attacks are not inspired. One number illustrates this poverty: 58, like the number of yards gained on the ground by the Giants. An illustration that the attacks were well muzzled by the defenses.

The other illustration is the 3rd interception on the Patriots side sent by Bailey Zappe (9/14, 54 yards, INT), converted into a field goal by Randy Bullock. The Patriots quarterback has a chance to make up for it. But this time, it’s his kicker Chad Ryland who misses, missing the equalizing field goal from 35 yards. An extension which could have been a terrible suffering, given the 60 minutes of poor quality that the 2 teams offered us.

The Patriots can always console themselves by saying that they are closer to the first choice of the Draft. This would allow them to rebuild, probably selecting their future quarterback.
