The Giants without Daniel Jones, what are they worth? Well, at first glance, not much. Dominated from start to finish, the New York franchise lost heavily. The fault is a non-existent defense but also a Tommy DeVito under pressure who multiplied the errors. Makes you wonder if Daniel Jones wasn't making this team run a little better.
On the Buccaneers side, we witnessed a real walk in the park. The defense was impeccable and Baker Mayfield is as surgical as ever. Well helped by his runners, the Tampa Bay quarterback was also able to rely on an effective offensive line, despite the absence of Tristan Wirfs.
Tommy DeVito in trouble
It was with a long drive of almost 9 minutes that the Buccaneers opened the ball. Sean Tucker infiltrates without incident on a short-yard run to score the first 6 points of the game. For the Giants, things are off to a bad start. After a good pass, Tommy DeVito (21/31, 189 yards, 7 races, 32 yards) is under pressure. He is finally sacked by Calijah Kancey on 3e attempt.
The G-men clear, Baker Mayfield (24/30, 294 yards, 4 races, 29 yards, 1 rushing TD) and his team too. Round 2 for Tommy DeVito… and another failure! More damaging this time: the Tampa Bay defense manages to stop Wan'Dale Robinson on 4e attempt at the Giants' 37 yards. In a superb position, the visitors' attack avoided an accident on a nasty fumble by Sean Tucker committed 2 yards from the end zone. Fortunately, Baker Mayfield watches and covers the ball in extremis. The Bucs stick to a field goal and worsen the score.
Opposite, Tommy DeVito has a series of bad performances. He is sacked by Anthony Nelson and stops after three attempts. Conversely, everything smiles in Tampa Bay. Bucky Irving is at the conclusion on a 6-yard run full center. That's already 17 unanswered points. DeVito is sacked for the third time in the game by Vita Vea. New York still can't do it.
Two minutes before the break, Baker Mayfield keeps up the pressure. He himself concludes this last drive with a 10-yard run and a nice goat jump over two defenders. The transformation may not be successful, 23-0 at half-time, it's starting to look like it's going to take a turn for the worse.
Tampa Bay dominates without forcing
Returning from the locker room, the Giants seem to show a different face. They approach the end zone for the first time but on a direct snap, the ball slips from the hands of Tyrone Tracy Jr. Tampa Bay recovers. And Baker does Baker. Always as precise, the conductor of the Buccaneers accumulates passes of more than 10 yards before letting Rachaad White conclude with a one-yard run for a touchdown.
For the first time in the match, the Giants respond to their opponents. In a sluggish drive, where Tommy DeVito came close to scoring on his own, Devin Singletary offered his team the first points on a one-yard run. Thanks to a block from Baker Mayfield, Bucky Irving takes off on a 56-yard run. But on the next action, Mayfield drops the ball. He is covered by DJ Davidson at the 35 yards in New York.
Unfortunately, the Giants do not take advantage of this and end up giving possession back in their half on a 4e failed attempt. We are 7 minutes from the end of the match and the stadium is already starting to empty. After an exchange of punts between the two teams, Tampa Bay melts the clock. New York tries to save honor but ultimately fails. Final score: 30 to 7.
