[Draft Sheets] Bryan Bresee (DT), mind of steel

Bryan Bresee – Defensive Tackle – 21 – RS Sophomore – Clemson

Height: 1m98
Weight: 135kg
2022 stats: 10 games, 15 tackles (including 5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, 1 deflected pass
Estimated draft position: 1st round
NFL Comparison: Christian Wilkins

National number 1 recruit upon leaving high school in the state of Maryland in 2020, the phenomenon Bryan Bresee burst onto the screen in his first season as a freshman (23 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 4 sacks). Unfortunately, physical glitches (cruciate ligament rupture, kidney infection) and extra-sporting concerns (death of his sister) slowed his progress during his last 2 university seasons.

Nonetheless, he remains an impressive player who has done damage within Clemson’s terrible defensive line. Enough to be called in the first round?

Strong points

  • Speed
  • Power
  • Competitiveness

The first thing you notice about Bryan Bresee is his first step. From the start of the ball, the player can be very reactive and can easily beat his direct opponent in order to switch directly to the quarterback for a sack or the running back for a tackle for loss. A quality of speed that was confirmed during the NFL Combine where he ran the 40 yards in 4.86 seconds.

Sized like a pinball, his upper body power makes him a tough player to stop. His ability to re-position himself to reach his target after being blocked is impressive. This is why the player is often double-teamed by the men on the offensive lines. This can be a valuable asset to his future teammates on the defensive line in the NFL.

Weak points

  • Movements in pass rush
  • Separation of blocks

Powerful and lively, Bryan Bresee, however, lacks technique and a range of movements in opposing passing situations. He can also lack fluidity in his movements and struggle against more mobile offensive linemen at the higher level.

Often caught in the middle because of his reputation, he is sometimes impatient to get rid of it. His technique at the level of the hands therefore remains to be perfected if he wants to be at the level of the best in the NFL.

Possible destinations

Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings
Choosing someone like Bryan Bresee is the guarantee of having a player with great potential. It can be aligned in 1-technique as nose tackle in obvious passing situations. But it will be best used in a 4-3 system with another defensive tackle in a 3-technique or 5-technique.

A team like Detroit could use Bryan Bresee as bait to be able to give Aidan Hutchison stat production, or vice versa. Same thing in Atlanta where Grady Jarrett will need help. In Green Bay or Minnesota he will have the versatility of being able to be aligned in a 3-4, to which he can contribute as defensive end from his first year.
