Each year, picks are added to the Draft. These are so-called “compensatory” choices, awarded to teams that lost players during free agency the previous year.
A formula including salaries, playing time and playoff experience is used to determine players whose departures are compensated by a Draft pick. Since 2020, teams that have seen a minority coach or manager hired by another franchise are also compensated.
In the end, this makes more and more compensatory choices. A total of 35 this year!
The 49ers are the ones who inflate their Draft capital the most, with seven new selections, including three in the third round.
