Two options after a touchdown? Not enough for the USFL. This Wednesday, the league, which will begin operations on April 16, unveiled its rules.
And there are bold attempts.
The main one concerns the conversion after a touchdown. Option 1: a point at the foot, classic. Option 2: a two-point conversion, again known. But the third option is more original: an attempt on the line of 10 yards, with three points in the key.
What if you want to keep possession after your 9-point touchdown? Well in addition to the onside kick, it will be possible to attempt a 4th and 12 yards. If successful, you keep the ball!
Penalty-style overtime
If the two teams are tied after regulation time, things are going to get pretty crazy. Each team will be entitled to three attempts on the two opposing yards. They will take turns playing them. For each attempt completed in the end zone, it will be 2 points. The team with the most points after three attempts wins. Still tied? We go to sudden death.
ESPN reports a few other quirky rules, like the ability to throw two forward passes in the same action as long as both are thrown behind the line of scrimmage.
On the chrono side, the clock will stop after each first down during the last two minutes of the second and fourth quarters.
It may not all work out, but this league might have the benefit of serving as a life-size laboratory.
