The humiliation suffered against the Raiders this Thursday was one too many.
The day after an embarrassing defeat against Las Vegas (which had not recorded a single point last week), the Chargers announced that they were parting ways with their head coach Brandon Staley as well as general manager Tom Telesco.
A not-so-great defensive genius
Arriving from the Rams in January 2021, Brandon Staley was expected to be the coach who would resurrect the Chargers defense from the ashes. It is clear that it was more the attack of the talented Justin Herbert (QB) which carried the team. In 2023, the Chargers conceded an average of 25 points per game, the 5th highest number of points, and only scored 21. With a negative differential, the noose tightened around the coach.
In three seasons under Staley, Los Angeles has recorded 24 wins for 25 losses and has only participated in the playoffs once in 2022. That year, the Chargers stopped in the first round, losing to to the Jaguars. Notably, the Jaguars trailed 27-0 at halftime and ultimately won 31-30.
A new era ?
In addition to Staley, the Chargers also parted ways with general manager Tom Telesco. He had held this position since 2013. This change of regime was perhaps synonymous with a new era opening in Los Angeles. No one doubts that the main mission of the newcomers will be to renew the squad, particularly in defense where the bottom hurts, so as not to waste the talent of Justin Herbert.
