The running back should pay the price for Justin Herbert’s future big contract extension
The rumor had already circulated on the first day of free agency, it is now confirmed by his agent and by ESPN. Indeed, the running back of the Chargers Austin Ekeler was authorized by his team to seek another team in order to conclude a trade during this offseason.
At 27, Ekeler is entering his final year of a $24.5 million contract. In 2023, Ekeler is expected to earn $6.25 million. Negotiations had begun with the Chargers for a contract extension but they were unsuccessful.
After the contract restructurings of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack which freed up $40 million in the salary margin, the Chargers are still cleaning up in order to be able to prepare for the future contract extension of quarterback Justin Herbert.
Top touchdown scorer last year (18 touchdowns) in the NFL, the running back spent 6 seasons with the Chargers. He is one of the few players in NFL history to score more than 25 rushing touchdowns and 25 receiving touchdowns in his first 6 NFL seasons.
