Arizona Cardinals (4-13) – Seattle Seahawks (9-8): 20-21
A hold-up for butter. Trailing by 7 points and under threat of a field goal (20-13), the Seahawks took advantage of Matt Prater's failure on 43 yards to take the field in an interesting position. A 34-yard pass from Geno Smith, and a two-point conversion later, both for the inevitable Tyler Lockett, and Seattle left with a snatch victory on another failure by Prater on 51 yards (20-21).
Green Bay's success against Chicago, however, makes this success anecdotal. The Seahawks are on vacation and will not see the playoffs. Opposite, the Cardinals made life difficult for them, especially on the ground where James Conner exceeded 1000 yards on the season (27 races, 150 yards, 1TD + 54 yards on 4 receptions). Arizona enters a crucial offseason with the 4th draft pick in its pocket.
Two copies to review
In a low-level match, the Cardinals believed they could make the difference in the second half thanks to two touchdown drives fueled by big gains on the ground. On the first, James Conner took advantage of a missed tackle from Jordyn Brooks to advance 34 yards, before finishing himself (13-13). On the second, the locals accumulated short gains before Tony McBride captured in the endzone on a contentious action (20-13).
Volunteers in defense and dominant on the lines, Jonathan Gannon's players would have deserved the victory but Matt Prater unscrewed his two crucial kicks, the second while Kyler Murray (22/30, 262 yards, 1 TD) had properly driven his team to 51 yards in one minute. After a less unsuccessful season than one might have feared, Arizona truly begins its reconstruction mission during this offseason.
With or without Carroll?
Opposite, Seattle only played one half, the first. With two field goals and a touchdown from Will Dissly, the visitors thought they had taken shelter before a huge air gap. The Seahawks gained only 108 yards in the second period, the fault of cautious play calls and a porous line. It was actually necessary to wait for the Ospreys to be eliminated after Green Bay's victory for the attack to break free and score the winning touchdown.
Such a match, against a team that had nothing to play for, is not going to stop the debates around Pete Carroll. The 72-year-old coach has never looked his age, appearing desperate by the performance of his defense, whose level in terms of tackling was downright disastrous. Seattle returns to his beloved studies.
