Cleveland Browns (2-7) – Los Angeles Chargers (5-3)
One half was enough for the Chargers to get the job done, take cover and push Cleveland a little deeper into the sand. Justin Herbert (18/27, 282 yards, 2 TDs) confirms his return to form with a clean and efficient performance. He was perfectly supported by his running back JK Dobbins (14 races, 85 yards, 2 TDs, 2 receptions, 20 yards).
The improvement of an unexpected victory against the Ravens last week did not last for the Browns. Jameis Winston like Dr. Jekyll and Master Hyde showed his worst face with 3 interceptions. The defense of 2023 is no more, especially in the air, where coverage has still been terribly lacking.
The big gap
The first half is completely one-sided in favor of the Californians. 200 more yards covered for an equivalent time of possession, Jim Harbaugh's men gave a lesson in realism. Definitely back at his best level, Justin Herbert takes advantage of the generosity in the coverage of the Browns to punish them. First by connecting with Josh Palmer, then with Quentin Johnston for a 68-yard touchdown.
The Chargers quickly hit the nail on the head with a great run from JK Dobbins. The best defense in 2023 is absent. And the improvement of Jameis Winston's tenure last week has lived on. Deshaun Watson's shadow is on the field. A small field goal in response and a multitude of punts.
Cleveland at the bottom of the hole
An offensive mediocrity which continued in the 2nd half, and even got worse. An interception thrown after returning from the locker room, an interception at the end of the 3rd quarter, Jameis Winston signs his 30th match with at least 2 interceptions.
The Browns are giving the total to their supporters. 4th failed attempt, blocked field goal and a 3rd interception for Winston. The cup is full. Not completely. To finish off the last remains of Cleveland's hopes (and pride), the Chargers' attack, although amorphous since the break, drives home the point. Jk Dobbins scores a double.
The quarterbacks change but the problems remain in Cleveland and the team seems to have to draw a line under 2024.
