Brad Holmes (GM, Lions): “Jared Goff has proven that he is our starting quarterback”

Arrived in Detroit in the exchange that sent Matthew Stafford to the Rams, Jared Goff was not really expected as a solution. More like a transition pitcher, meanwhile.

Except that after a first season of honest adaptation (19 TDs, 8 int), Goff convincingly led a Lions attack ranked 4th in yards gained in 2022. With 29 touchdowns for 7 interceptions, and an evaluation of 99 .3, he signed a campaign worthy of his best years with Sean McVay in Los Angeles (32 TDs, 12 int, 101.1 rating in 2018).

Above all, Detroit ended the season with a bang, without its quarterback seeming to raise questions. The mood around Goff has therefore changed, and it starts with his bosses, who are now much less inclined towards the idea of change.

“I think it’s much easier to do worse than to progress to the quarterback position in this league,” said Brad Holmes at a Maedi press conference. “What Jared has done this season is captain a Top 3 offense, and personally be in the Top 10 in most passing statistical categories. »

For the general manager, if the usual talk about the Draft remains, Goff seems to have gained confidence.

“You know how we approach the Draft. We’re never going to turn down a good player, so if it’s a player we love, we’ll make sure to look at all the options. But I think Jared has proven to everyone that he’s our starting quarterback. »

It should be remembered that Holmes was a member of the Rams when the franchise drafted Goff in first position in the 2016 Draft. He is therefore one of those who believed in him from the start.

The Lions will select with the 6th and 18th picks in the first round in the next draft. The 6th is precisely one of the choices that the Draft had sent in addition to Goff to recover Stafford, in what increasingly looks like a good deal for Detroit.
