Always more, more, more, more…. Always more, more, more, more… The NFL has panicked the American television meters all season. The Super Bowl served as the finale.
Nielsen and Adobe Analytics announce that Super Bowl LVIII brought together 123.4 million Americans in front of their televisions and on streaming platforms. This is quite simply the largest audience in the history of American television.
CBS, Nickelodeon, Univision and Paramount+ broadcast the meeting this year. In total, 202.4 million people watched at least part of the match on these channels. Again, this is a record.
Last year, 115.1 million people watched the Chiefs beat the Eagles. It was the new record at the time. This year's match is therefore 7% better.
A new way to calculate Super Bowl audiences
Is America more NFL crazy than ever?
The figures should perhaps be taken with a little perspective. In 2020, Nielsen began integrating views recorded outside of traditional households. That is to say that hotels, restaurants or bars began to be taken into account. First, it was in a few states. In 2024, the measure was extended to all 50 US states.
Furthermore, the absolute values given to announce records can also be put into perspective by the increase in the American population. There were 281 million Americans in 2000, according to the United States Census Bureau. There were 331.4 million in 2020. Obviously, that means more potential viewers.
