According to NFL Network, JJ McCarthy's (QB, Vikings) season is already over before it even begins!
The Vikings' rookie quarterback underwent season-ending meniscus surgery Wednesday morning. The injury occurred during the Vikings' preseason opener against the Raiders a few days earlier. The surgery is necessary if the player wants to have a chance at a long NFL career.
This is therefore a big blow for the Vikings who have already lost Kirk Cousins during the 2023 season early in the season. It is not necessarily the same context with the rookie, but once again, the Minnesota franchise is not getting away with long-term injuries at the quarterback position.
Sam Darnold as quarterback for the entire season?
JJ McCarthy impressed in this first preseason game. And, he was probably expected to start at some point as the season progressed. Unfortunately for him, he will have to wait a year before seeing an NFL field.
Coach Kevin O'Connell will therefore trust Sam Darnold, who arrived during the offseason. It is therefore a chance (perhaps the last) for the former 3rd choice of the 2018 Draft to prove himself in the big league. The former quarterback of the Jets, Panthers and 49ers can rely on choice targets (Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson), in order to be able to relaunch his career. A career of 66 games including 56 as a starter, with 63 touchdowns thrown for 56 interceptions. All accompanied by 12,064 yards and 13 touchdowns on the run.
The hope of qualifying for the playoffs may have just diminished a little more with this long-term injury. While the revolution was underway.
