On Monday, Kyle Shanahan announced that his star runner is suffering from a posterior cruciate knee ligament injury. He is expected to be in the infirmary for about six weeks. Shanahan announced that Jordan Mason is also expected to go on injured reserve. McCaffrey's backup is suffering from a major ankle sprain and is expected to miss at least four weeks.
Mason is San Francisco's most productive rusher this year, with 789 yards gained in 12 games.
It is now Isaac Guerendo who finds himself propelled number one runner.
For McCaffrey, it is the end of a season in the form of an ordeal. Hampered by tendinitis in both Achilles tendons during the summer, he missed the first eight games of the season. He then played only four games, with 202 yards rushing and 146 more receiving. He will not have found the end zone once in 2024.
