Christian McCaffrey revives the running backs in the race for extensions. The 28-year-old will be a 49ers player through 2028.
Christian McCaffrey will be a 49ers for the next 4 seasons. The running back has just signed a two-year extension for an additional $38 million, including $24 million guaranteed according to NBC.
This new deal will also serve as a salary increase. In 2024 he was to earn $11.8 million, he will now earn $19 million. The amount may seem insignificant compared to the annual averages of the last receivers signed. She remains exceptional for a running back.
More than just a runner
Running back is, however, a simple label given to McCaffrey. He showed that he was capable of producing much more, on the ground but especially in the air. In 2019 he became the 3e player in history to achieve at least 1000 rushing yards and 1000 receiving yards in the same season.
Last year he performed just as well, rushing for 1,459 yards (career best) and catching balls for 564 yards. His season was rewarded with an Offensive Player of the Year trophy and a 3e place in the votes for the MVP. CMC is a “double threat” that thrives in the San Francisco system. John Lynch (GM) therefore did not hesitate to give a substantial sum to the 28-year-old player, despite his “status”.
