49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has just requested a trade after failing to agree on a new contract.
Negotiations were thought to be on track. Not so for Brandon Aiyuk (WR, 49ers). The All-Pro receiver from San Francisco has just asked to be traded, we learned from NFL Network.
Despite meeting recently with franchise executives, Aiyuk has apparently failed to find the right compromise for a contract extension. Negotiations have been ongoing since May, according to Mike Garafolo.
26 million per year, the best offer yet for Aiyuk
On July 3, Garafolo assured that there would be no immediate trade request. The receiver had, at that time, planned to report to training camp in July. And if no agreement was reached, everything suggested that the 26-year-old receiver would play out the final year of his contract, worth $14 million. Despite positive exchanges with the 49ers, Aiyuk ultimately reversed his decision.
According to ESPN on June 25, the Niners' best offer was $26 million per season, the eighth-highest pay in the league at the position. But the 26-year-old receiver is hoping for more, perhaps with a big check worthy of the top of the league.
