World Cup records to break

More rooted in the American culture of the NBA, individual records do not remain numerous in basketball more broadly international, and in particular in the World Cup, created in 1950 for basketball

Three days before the start of the 2023 edition, the 19th in history which takes place in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, here is a brief summary of the main individual records in the history of the World Basketball, theater, at over the years, some memorable performances by players of very high caliber, of all nationalities.

It should also be noted that no one has yet achieved a triple-double in competition. In 2019 in China, Joe Ingles (17 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists) and Dennis Schröder (21 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists) had come close to it, and the Australian winger and the German leader will be in Asia again at the end of the week. To achieve this first triple-double in history, we will rely instead on Luka Doncic or Josh Giddey.

Best point average

These are averages from another time with two of the greatest attackers in the history of international basketball. Common to Schmidt and Galis, they have never played in the NBA! The two chained the cards before the globalization of the NBA, and we remember that certain franchises forced the Brazilian to pass tests…

Oscar Schmidt (Brazil) / 34.6 points / 1990

Nick Galis (Greece) / 33.7 points / 1986

Shin Dong-pa (South Korea) / 32.6 points / 1970

Luis Scola (Argentina) / 27.1 points / 2010

Arthur Guerrero (Mexico) / 27 points / 1974

Highest point total

We take the same with, again, totals that are difficult to reach. Even Scola and Nowitzki, in 2010, remained at a distance.

Nick Galis (Greece) / 337 points / 1986

Oscar Schmidt (Brazil) / 277 points / 1990

Shin Dong-pa (South Korea) / 261 points / 1970

Luis Scola (Argentina) / 244 points / 2010

Dirk Nowitzki (Germany) / 216 points / 2010

Most points in one game

Even if no player has reached the 50 point mark for 33 years, these are accessible records. A freewheeling Doncic, a Clarkson fired up in front of his fans or an ebullient Edwards can reach this bar.

Hur Jae (South Korea) / 54 points against Egypt / 1990

Nick Galis (Greece) / 53 points against Panama / 1986

Oscar Schmidt (Brazil) / 52 points v Australia / 1990

Jordi Villacampa (Spain) / 48 points against Venezuela / 1990

Dirk Nowitzki And Drazen Petrovic (Germany and Croatia) / 47 points against Angola and the Netherlands / 2006 and 1986

Best passing average

The records are fresh since they date from the last edition. There are some big passers this year, like Tyrese Haliburton, Josh Giddey or even Doncic, and maybe one of those three can break the 10-average mark.

Dennis Schröder (Germany) / 9.4 assists / 2019

Tomas Satoransky (Czech Republic) / 8.5 assists / 2019

Facundo Campazzo (Argentina) / 7.8 assists / 2019

Marcelo Gustavo Milanesio (Argentina) / 6.9 assists / 1994

Toni Kukoc (Croatia) / 6.8 assists / 1994

Passing records in one game

Faced with weak Egypt, Galakteros had feasted, and his record seems unreachable. Like Scott Skiles’ 30 assists in the NBA.

Athanasios Galakteros (Greece) / 22 assists v Egypt / 1994

Toni Kukoc (Croatia) / 15 assists v China / 1994

Xane Dalmeida (Senegal) / 14 assists against the Philippines / 2014

Tomas Satoransky And Scottie Wilbekin (Czech Republic and Turkey) / 13 assists v Australia and Montenegro / 2019

Best rebound average

Who could have answered Andray Blatche, the former interior of the Wizards? Naturalized, he had reigned over the Philippine racket.

Andray Blatche (Philippines) / 13.8 rebounds / 2014

Guna Ra (South Korea) / 12.8 rebounds / 2019

Richard Lugo (Venezuela) / 12.2 rebounds / 2002

Richard Lugo And Hamed Haddadi (Venezuela and Iran) / 11.4 rebounds / 2006 and 2014

Hamed Haddadi (Iran) / 10.8 rebounds / 2019

Record rebounds in one game

No Turkey this year at the World Cup, while the record is co-held, 12 years apart, by Turks.

Mirsad Turkcan And Omer Asik (Turkey) / 20 rebounds against Russia and Ukraine / 2002 and 2014

Daniel Santiago (Puerto Rico) / 18 rebounds vs. USA / 2002

Greg Newton (Canada) / 17 rebounds against Australia / 1998
