WNBA Finals: despite 14 points from Marine Johannès, Liberty loses Game 1 against the Aces

The Las Vegas Aces remain undefeated since the start of the WNBA playoffs and therefore started this final against the New York Liberty in the best way by winning Game 1 of this star-rich duel.

With sparks notably brought by Marine Johannès coming out of the bench (14 points, all scored in the first half, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), like their four 3-point baskets from elsewhere, the New Yorkers still believed in their chances once most of the match. At +3 at the break (46-49), Breanna Stewart’s teammates were still in the game until the end of the third quarter (67-63).

It is at this moment that the Plum-Young-Gray-Wilson quartet has decided to move up a gearinflicting an 11-2 then a 12-2 to seal the fate of the match four minutes from the buzzer (92-71).

Alongside Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young, at 26 points each, Chelsea Gray stood out with 20 points, while A’Ja Wilson compiled 19 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, for a big success 99 to 82 in the end.

Game 2 will take place on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, still in the lair of the reigning champions.

There should still be quite a few stars on the edge of the floor while Tom Brady, minority owner of the Las Vegas Aces, LeBron James, Sheryl Swoopes and Mark Wahlberg were present for this first match.
