It’s been almost two years since Brittney Griner had no longer played an official game in front of his Phoenix home crowd. After missing the entire 2022 season due to detention in Russia, the seven-time All-Star received a standing ovation from fans at the Footprint Center as his name was announced.
In front of nearly 14,000 spectators, nearly double the average attendance last season, she was honored with a tribute video on the giant screen, with the music “Coming Home” by Skylar Grey.
“It was moving. Just hearing and seeing certain clips. They tricked me with this song” said Brittney Grinerwho says he started crying during the presentation. “Part of the healing process is letting things out. I was very emotional and tried to hide it”.
Feelings rediscovered
On the sporting level, the performance of Brittney Griner is very encouraging for the future. The interior thus shone with a double-double in the key: 27 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks at 9/13 shooting. A high-level individual performance which unfortunately did not prevent Mercury from losing at home to Sky (75-69).
The highlight of the match will remain this 3-pointer from Brittney Griner to bring Phoenix back to five lengths in the 3rd Quarter. In the process, she turned around before yelling “I’m back” in front of a cheering crowd.
“I find sensations, I train every day and I give my all. My teammates believe in me and support me” emphasizes Brittney Griner. “My defense was horrible in the preseason game, so I knew that was an important point to settle. So I know that’s one of the priorities going forward. I will try to play a big game defensively and get the job done in attack.”.
