In full reconstruction after the transfer of Bradley Beal to the Suns, the Wizards may continue to “move” in the strict sense of the term. According to the Washington Postthe Washington franchise and its twin sister in ice hockey (NHL), the Capitals, are studying the possibility of leaving the American capital.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the group that owns those teams, has reportedly entered into discussions with government officials about a possible move a little further south, to Northern Virginia.
No moves for eleven years in the NBA
These discussions are described as preliminary since the group has also reached out to city officials to discuss possible funding for the upgrade of the arena, the Capital One Arena. The two clubs have been playing in this lair, known in the past as the Verizon Center, since 1998.
The Washington Post, owned by Jeff Bezos, suggests that the recent location of Amazon’s second headquarters in Northern Virginia may have influenced the teams’ considerations.
It is recalled that no NBA franchise has moved permanently to another state or territory since the Nets left New Jersey for Brooklyn in 2012.
