With the “Harry Giles rule”, the “two-way contract” evolve in the NBA

Little by little, the 676 pages of the new collective agreement, signed by the NBA and the players, are analyzed and the subtleties appear. We knew that the teams that spent too little or too much would now be more severely sanctioned, we now notice that a point of regulation on the “two-way contract” will evolve.

Until now, for a player to sign such a contract, he could not have played in the NBA for more than three seasons. This will still be the case with the new collective agreement, but one detail changes everything. Indeed, if a player misses an entire season because of an injury, then the latter will no longer be counted.

That’s what happened to Harry Giles III. Drafted in 2017, the interior did not walk the court in 2017/2018 due to knee injuries. As he then played the following three seasons, this summer, he could no longer claim a “two-way contract”, having four years of seniority in the league.

It was the player’s agent, Daniel Hazan, who contacted the league and the players’ union to highlight the particular situation of Harry Giles III. Even Jayson Tatum, Giles III’s former teammate at Duke, gave him his support. “I gave him my support. I just tried to help my guy. He deserves this chance. »

Both sides have agreed to consider that if a player misses a year during his first three seasons, it should not count and thus not prevent him from signing a “two-way contract”. This rule will henceforth be informally known as the “Harry Giles III rule”.
