November 29, 2023 against the Clippers. This date and this match are the last where we find traces of a performance without a double-double Domantas Sabonis. Because against the Sixers, the Lithuanian achieved another double-double and it's the 54th in a row.
This is a record for the modern NBA, marked by the merger with the ABA in 1976. Kevin Love, in 2010/11, had 53 matches at this level. The Sacramento player, with a 25th triple-double (11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists), therefore did better, under the eyes of Adam Silver.
“He is having a phenomenal season. He should have been an All-Star, that’s obvious, and obviously we should be talking about him for one of the All-NBA Teams. He should also be in the discussions for the MVP, given his level of play”, estimated Mike Brown.
Selected for an All-NBA Team in 2023, Domantas Sabonis was not selected for the All-Star Game and will not be MVP of the regular season. But with already 25 triple-doubles this season, he makes NBA history since only Oscar Robertson, Wilt Chamberlain, Russell Westbrook and Nikola Jokic had already reached this total.
” It's incredible. He's a modest boy. As humble as possible,” describes Davion Mitchell. “He just says we have to keep winning games. He's not really aware that what he's done is incredible in the NBA. It's incredible to watch. »
Wilt Chamberlain had entire seasons of double-doubles!
And so there are his 54 double-doubles in a row. A record in the modern NBA – never seen for fifty years and the 1973/74 season – because before 1976, four players had done better: Wilt Chamberlain (seven times…), Elvin Hayes (twice), Elgin Baylor and Walt Bellamy .
The first city also has the real record with 81 in a row in 1966/67! That is the entire season since, at the time, the teams played 81 matches. The 82 matches will arrive the following year, in 1967/68. A feat already achieved before: in 1961/62 and 1963/64, Wilt Chamberlain had compiled 80 matches out of 80 with a double-double.
As the Kings have eleven games remaining, Domantas Sabonis, if he continues his streak until the end, can therefore reach 65 double-doubles in a row, which would be the ninth best performance in the history of the league.
“I have a lot of experience in this sport, I have seen great things and some of the best players of all time. I had the chance to be close to Tim Duncan for three seasons in a row and we are talking about a record that even a player of his level had not achieved,” admires Mike Brown, assistant to Gregg Popovich in San Antonio between 2000 and 2003. “It’s hard to put into words because it seems so easy. His work ethic and determination are second to none. He fights on every rebound, he takes hits but he is the Duracell bunny. It goes on and on. »
