With a large Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs outclass the bucks

Victor Wembanyama would he have magic in his hands? The doubt is indeed allowed, especially after this first class action which he offered to the public of the Frost Bank Center in the 3rd quarter: under the pressure of the 24 seconds and well marked by Giannis Antetokounmpo, “Wemby” sent a Prayer that has – almost – miraculously finished in it.

It is precisely during this period, won 45 to 30 by the Texans, that the Spurs-counting up to 16 points ahead (115-99)-took the ascendant on the Bucks, to sign their third biggest victory of the season (+26, 144-118). “We set the tone from the start of the second half. Our physical dimension allowed us to impose ourselves, our execution and our communication have been better ”welcomes Mitch Johnson.

Led by a Keldon Johnson sharp and author of 17 points in 12 minutes in the first period, the Spurs first had to compose without their French super star in attack. It was his teammates, so often criticized for their low attacking contribution, who fueled the brand.

A duel Victor Wembanyama – Giannis Antetokounmpo who held his promises

Always very dissuasive in defense, “Wemby” has long been caught up, jostled and heckled by its Greek counterpart, before leaving its box on the return from the locker room and to hinder, its turn, the double MVP of the NBA (2019 and 2020 ). This did not prevent Giannis Antetokounmpo from signing an XXL performance, again concluded on a large “double-double”, with 35 points at 13/23 on shots, 14 rebounds and 6 assists in 34 minutes.

Logo shooting, award-winning award-winning on a leg and counters at high altitude, the Spurs' Frenchy “posed very serious problems in Milwaukee, with 14 points scored in the 3rd quarter alone. Just rewarded for his first selection at the All-Star Game, he blackens all the statistical columns: from his 30 points to 9/20 to the shots passing by his 14 rebounds and his 6 counters in just 30 minutes. But it was especially on the other side of the field that he impressed Mitch Johnson: “He was the defense“ quarterback ”this evening thanks to his communication. When he uses his voice to coordinate our defense, he takes us to another level ”.

The Bucks then accused the blow at the beginning of the 4th quarter, to the point of counting twenty points behind their evening host. A deficit that Damian Lillard (22 points) and his teammates will never have managed to fill. A small scuffle between the “Greek Freak” and Jeremy Sochan led a dull and without real suspense match.

What to remember

– Spurs end January on a positive note. Handed out in the race for “play-in”, the Texans had an extremely complicated 2025 year 2025. This 4th victory in 12 games no doubt will be able to Mitch Johnson's men-in “back-to-back” against the Heat-to approach their “Rodeo Road Trip” in better measures.

– Stephon Castle still shines. When “Wemby” was in trouble, it was the “rookie” of the spurs that raised his level of play. The former Uconn leader, well supported by Chris Paul and Keldon Johnson, distributed the game wonderfully (20 points 5/14 on shots, 8 rebounds and 6 assists in 30 minutes). Maybe rumors about the arrival of De'Aaron Fox motivated it …
