With a great Joel Embiid (42 points), the 76ers take their revenge on the Hawks

Beaten in Atlanta in the first round, on the night of Thursday to Friday, the 76ers were keen to take their revenge on the Hawks, this time on their floor at the Wells Fargo Center.

It’s done, since the men of Doc Rivers offer themselves a relatively easy victory at the end of a serious and generally controlled match (121-109). Clumsy behind the arc (8/24), the 76ers relied on domination near the circle of Joel Embiid (42 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks), well supported by a Tyrese Maxey inspired, both scoring (26 points) than at playmaking (9 assists).

Dominated in the first half (-16 at the break), close to sinking on the return from the locker room when they were up to 27 points behind, the Hawks finished the game better than they started it, under the impetus of their pair of backs Trae Young – Dejounte Murray who compiled 50 points, but it was largely insufficient to worry these 76ers sure of them.

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

Joel Embiid, the key for the 76ers. While the battle in the paint was very balanced, since both teams scored 56 points, and outside shooting was not a strong point on either side (8/24 for the 76ers, 6 /25 for the Hawks), the pivot with the triple nationality made the difference in two very specific areas: at mid-distance, the zone in which he finished at 5/9, and on the free throw line, where he compiled a 13/16. He finished the game with 42 points (14/25), 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Opposite, the Hawks did not have the weapons to counter his volume of play at mid-range, since they only scored 6 small shots in this area, over the entire meeting.

The Hawks attack on AC. Distanced at the break (67-51), then even led by 27 points at the start of the third quarter, the Hawks however managed to come back within 10 lengths of their opponents in the last quarter. The reason ? The awakening of their attack in the second half of the third act (33 points, 52% on shots). Before that, a sluggish first half on this side of the field (43% on shots), like this ugly ratio of 6 passes for 12 ball losses. With 24 more careful first minutes, the Hawks would certainly have been in a position to win, since their second period was much more satisfying than the first.

TOPS & FLOPS

Tyrese Maxey. Successful game for dragster of the 76ers, who signs the best +/- of his team (+24) in relay of Joel Embiid, with 26 points (10/18) and 9 assists. Main ball carrier since the injury of James Harden, the former Kentucky has shown great things, bringing a stabilizing presence at the head of the attack of the 76ers.

✅⛔️ Trae Young and Dejounte Murray. Good offensive stats on paper (27 points and 11 assists for the first, 23 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals), which reflect a substantial volume of play in attack for the Hawks “backcourt” (50 of their team’s 109 points), but in fact a lot of waste (7 bullet losses for Trae Young, 9/23 on shots for Dejounte Murray), which result in +/- negatives (-5 and -21).

⛔️ John Collins. While his two teammates mentioned above were struggling somehow in a somewhat monotonous attack, the strong winger of the Hawks did not respond present, in support. In 33 minutes, he only scored 6 points, on 6 shots. His 6 rebounds do not prevent him from finishing with the worst +/- of the meeting, the two teams combined (-22).
